“I tried to be nice. I really did.”
richard gansey iii had forgotten how many times he had been told he was destined for greatness.
“The scariest thing is, I used to think what made me creative was the fact I was a big hedonist. But towards the end, it was actually quite hard to make songs because I was in so much pain and all I was writing about was: ‘How do I get out of this trap?’ The theme of my writing was like: ‘I’m stuck, I’m fucked, I don’t know how to make this stop. Help, help, help!’ I sort of stopped [the abuse] just before I made the track ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.’ To show people this side of yourself, which is so frightening to you, and for people to accept it with love, and to sing it with people, was a really big catharsis. So I just found that my brain was more open. I just kind of wrote it down and let it all go.” - Florence Welch photographed by Quentin Jones for Elle UK (November 2017) [ x ]
‘On stage, she says, she always felt absolved – nobody was angry with her up there. It was her offstage life that she had to work on. Up there she will climb the scaffolding, holding on with one hand, leaping into the crowd and ripping her top off when she gets too sweaty. After those nights it’s quite hard for her to return to earth. Everything, she explains, starts to take on a magical significance. There will be moments – sitting in a friend’s room watching TV, for instance – when, sleep-deprived and sober, she will be suddenly awed. “Mundane moments become incredibly profound. The performing, the transcendence, then sitting watching TV – all can coexist, and the mundane makes the magical. Maybe I’m trying to hold on to normalcy. Maybe because being onstage has become normal, the pockets of peace seem really wild. But I treasure them.”’ - Florence Welch photographed by Phil Fisk for The Observer (June 2018)
“I always seem to feel that everything is about to cave in on me. I think that maybe music is my protection from that and in some senses it’s an outlet to turn it into something euphoric: embracing the eventual decline.” - Florence Welch photographed by Vincent Haycock (2018)
