Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

I have had very many thoughts about various ones over the years and only ended up pulling the trigger on two literary-adjacent before this, but it's up there with my absolute favorite genre of tattoos (something about the body as book or record of life, the juxtaposition of static page and enlivened skin, + the opening to talk about your favorite books to anyone who asks 😈)

oh my goddd OK I'm a 2005 P&P hater and BBC version diehard but... I weirdly loved the 2022 persuasion? we watched it right after rereading the book and like yes they fully made Anne into a heinous nutcase which is awful but everything else about the movie is great and it also actually me feel the yearny, romantic, stomach-hurty feelings that persuasion makes me feel? I said that to someone today and she was like I just lost a little bit of respect for you and I was like welp 😭

as you say though aspects of it are really in the spirit of austen! the way it shifts Mary to be a much more relevant contemporary version of the same archetype felt very well done to me. also Louisa's character.

OK the literary tattoo idea is... Tintern Abbey

but my dad loves tintern abbey and he shared that with me when I was young and when I first read it I didn't get it and then I read it more and more over the years and loved it more every time, though I have written two separate papers excoriating its gender politics lol

but I've especially always loved the part where it talks about "that best portion of a good man's life / his little, nameless, unremembered acts / of kindness and of love" and it's always made me think about my dad because that's the kind of person he is and also because that stanza is the part of the poem he can recite and now I can too

B. I cannot agree more about the stomach-hurty yearning in the 2022 Persuasion. My god. It is its magic. SO much pleasant yearning and tenderness and just the *right* edge of anticipatory anxiety, not just in Anne and Wentworth, but the Harvilles and Louisa and Charles and even the idea of Lady Russell's European Tours (I *loved* that little detail).

C. Yes omfg Mary that actress is *pitch perfect*

D. Tintern Abbey!!!!! Would you believe I have actually been there and did not know until just this moment it had a gd Wordsworth poem about it? How did I?? Miss that???? In the gift shop no less?????? I will read/listen to it tonight (I *just* finished listening to Sir Ian McKellen doing The Rime of the Ancient Mariner so in precisely the right frame of mind).

E. I absolutely love the oral tradition you and your dad share and the idea of that tradition and inside joke/shared love made manifest in a tattoo that is incredibly sweet + a tattoo involving a medieval monastery is based as fuck
