Reflection

When I first saw the name of the class ‘Communication Design Studies’, I was kind of dreading it because the name just sounded so boring. In the end I was pleasantly surprised as it became my favourite class of this semester. I really like more ‘hands-on’ approaches to design, so this class was perfect for that. My goal for this class was to try some new mediums for design; I’d never dabbled in zine-making or even collaging before this and I would absolutely like to try those things more in the future.

As far as the history of design, I was already familiar with most of the modern movements like Bauhaus or Memphis, so I was particularly interested in the development of the Chinese written language and how it has developed from sort of hieroglyphics to a more simplified set of characters over thousands of years. It was so interesting to see the likeness between the early Chinese calligraphy, and their paintings of leaves and bamboo; the technique was almost the same.

Overall I also rather enjoyed the short tasks that we did each class. It was interesting to work in some similar ways to what we had seen in the lectures, creating typefaces, collages, clay phones and whatnot. It was good to work in small groups such as these to see how others work, and the difference when working in a group.

+ I made the final magazine today. I am very satisfied with the outcome. The folding and binding was difficult due to the heaviness of the papers. However, thanks to my fails in my experiments previously, I made the final with no big trouble.

+ I am planning to send the photos to my creative. I wish she likes my zine.

WEEK 13

In the end I ended up making 5 zines, turns out it’s a lot harder than it originally seems. So many of the pages just didn’t print correctly, so some material was wasted. I bound the zines by sewing them down the middle, instead of stapling, and also created a cover that is sewn together, so you have to tear it open to read it ;)

WEEK 12

I developed a full colour version of what my zine would look like. The final zones would be black ink printed on coloured paper, so this was just a way for me to visualise how the colours interact with each other along with the graphics. I played around with the idea of introducing some subtle colours to be printed on the coloured paper, though I think the effect was much stronger with just black ink.

- WEEK 11 -

We started developing our own zines this week. I knew that I wanted this particular piece on a three-page fold out as the size of it perfectly fits an A3 (three A5 pages side by side).

WEEK 10

My Practice Zine

We spent the class playing around with InDesign and some zine templates. I couldn’t get the printer to work so I just printed a little A6 zine at home. It could be my best work yet, and I may have peaked too early but we’ll see how it goes.

WEEK 9

It was a bit of a collage session today which I enjoyed more than I was expecting. The idea was to find letterforms with magazine images, then cut them out and collag-ify them. We ended the session with an intro to zining, which happened to be just as interesting as the collaging.

WEEK 8

We spent some time walking around the campus looking for letterforms with the world. I found that it was a lot easier than I expected with letters appearing frequently in buildings and other structures. It’s interesting how you would never notice the letters are there until you go out looking for them. It will be interesting to see how the web app turns out.

WEEK 7

I spent some time trying to find potential interviewees, and of course, you just need to think of one and then the rest seem to come. I contacted some artists/designers that I have been following for a while like Ruskidd, Differantly, and ‘It’s a Living’. These creators are pretty big so I didn’t really expect any replies and lo and behold... I didn’t, so I’ll continue looking.

Week 5, in this week we submitted the first project which called MY QUESTION IS. In this project first we created question that related to design. Then we made type face from found object. My question is ‘How do you get inspiration?’. I used melted wax and smoke to express inspiration.

We started with just squares to create a legible typeface. Then we were given semi-circles that we added to the original shapes and it improved the clarity, somewhat.

Week 5

~~The production of my first assignment~~

The question that I thought of for this assignment was ‘Can Designers Design Designers?’. This question references the advance of AI in the field of design, and whether ‘design’ that is created artificially, can actually be classified as design.

When I was thinking of ways to represent this question, my first thought was something involving robotics or machinery, however I realised that AI design happens at the software level. To represent this, I used circuit boards and applied solder and wires to them to form my letters, and added LED lights to contextualise it as a computer circuit.

Week 4

We just learned a bit about the editing process for RAW images and resizing for assignment 1. Although I’ve done this before, it was good to learn some new techniques in editing with curves.

Week 3

Pangram - using every letter of the alphabet in a single sentence. Often used by type designers as a way of displaying every designed letter in context.

We began with one long roll of string, trying to form it into letters which was proving to be difficult, so we added some pins to the mix which allowed us to create more defined letter structures, and it also allowed us to make use of everyone in the group, with some people pinning, and some string-ing.

We then had to write the same sentence, but this time with water on concrete in the sun, and as big as possible. We realised that we would have to work quickly as the water was evaporating in seconds, so we had everyone do a word, then quickly took the photo...

Week 2

We were simulating the progression of symbol making, from hand signals (the earliest form of communication), to text messages and selfies (current day).

Working with the “clay” gave us an idea of how marks were made thousands of years ago to convey a message in the most efficient way.

For week one of Communication Design Studies, we had the task of creating a phrase out of a collection of objects that our group had. We opted for a more abstract approach representing the idea of ‘thinking outside the box’. The end result was quite effective as we were able to convey meaning using not only words but some form of symbolism in the box.
