Oline Reflective Journal

My target for Communication Design Studies was to get to know what is communication design. The reason why I wanted to achieve this because I had no idea what is communication design. I could not achieve it completely but I started understanding the importance of the typeface or font. Before taking this course I never considered that fonts can give a meaning and have deep history many people worked hard to develop it. Moreover, the most important thing I learnt from this course is make normal things special and make special things normal. The creative inspired me was Sylvan’s first assignment final when I saw it first time it captured my hurt. Mine was too complicated looks and it was hard to read and the question and the material I used was not much well. Sylvan’s was easy to read and and question and material he used was much very well. The most activity made me to think differently about design is the one we did in week 8 that finding letters and numbers from around the campus. This activity taught me that inspiration is everywhere.

Algorithm-Driven Design

Artificial Intelligence is still a relatively new and misunderstood term, however the impact it will have on the future of the design world has begun to gain attention. Miklos Philips article, ‘The Present and Future of AI in Design’ explores how this new technology will help and hinder the creative industry.

Philips states that AI design tools will become an essential design tool, helping refine designs more quickly with machine learning based on millions of other successful designs. AI can also be used to personalise the user experience based on their profile and previous interactions with the technology. Coupling AI with other technologies such as voice and facial recognition the technology will be able to determine gender, age, location and other aspects of a user to personalise and optimise their experience. However, as this is becoming more of a reality questions have to be asked about the morality of privacy and the dangers of such personal data.

Netflix has already begun experimenting with augmented intelligence to personalise show thumbnails for individual’s users, tailoring the artwork for each user to highlight the aspects of a title that are specifically relevant to them. For example, when showing the classic Pulp Fiction to a Netflix user who has previously watched movies featuring Uma Thurman, Netflix will show the artwork that contains Uma. If someone is more of a John Travolta fan they will show the alternative cover (SHOWN ABOVE).

In Personal application icons project, I designed three application icons for music, video and music production. Also, I have used abstract elements for these three icons.

Week 13,

My final zine, I’m not happy with result but it was really good experience to make zine and it was interesting to make and do interview.

Zine Making

At the workshop, I used Indesign to make a zine. It was my first time to use Adobe Indesign so I found a lot of problems and difficulties while doing this work. I think I need more time to be familiar with the software. 

The creative I interviewed is a pastry chef so I will try to test more different formats, compositions and textures to create the style to match the voice of the artist’s artworks. As a result, I will make another version for the final assignment.

We learned how to create a basic 8 page zine using InDesign and how to put together basic elements such as images, typography and basic coloured backgrounds, in addition to learning about master pages and paragraph styles. We were provided with templates which greatly helped with impositioning pages. This is a mock up created to test how the zine would be folded, stapled and trimmed.

I like this sentence. In school I learned it’s good to repeat a sentence to memorize it. So I did. in-zine (really bad pun with ‘insane’ and ‘zine’)

I trialled a variety of leaves and natural inks. Beetroot juice was the most successful, and to my surprise the majority of the leaves did not yield a desirable result. The ones with thick veins worked well, as the beetroot juice is not as viscous as paint. 

To make the beetroot ink I boiled chopped beetroots and blended it into a puree. It was then strained and became ready to use.

There is something wonderful about using natural materials that fit with each other, there is a connection and feeling of harmony.

Week 12,

This week we got template for second project for communication design studies which is Online reflective journal. It was helpful to write that assignment.

Week 11,

this week we did experiment to make zine. I added damage on the adge of pages but didn’t work well. It was good time to try and fined interesting way to make zine.

Week 10,

First time I made zine just for experiment. We were given template and used it cut it in class. Just little bit got used to making zine.

Week 9, we made collage by using images from random magazines to create english letter and I made J. Everyone made really beautiful work and idea that did not come up with me.

Week 8, we walked around campus to find letters and numbers. I found D, 6 and Y. After that we learnt the structure of zine and made templates.

WHAT’S THE CORE OF DESIGN?

I asked the question “WHAT’S THE CORE OF DESIGN?” for the first assignment of communication design studies. I think designers have to find the core of design by deconstructing the problem and defining the goal of the project step by step as chopping fruit into small pieces and then we can see the pit (the core) in the end. By doing so, I believe designers can create quality work with useful functions and fresh visual elements to communicate effectivelly and successfully with their audience.

Week 5

Do good designers need a style?

With this assignment, my available materials kind of dictated what my question had to be. I don’t have a lot of stuff!

The critique I received for this work was fair and useful. One key point was that I could have afforded to take more of a risk. This is something I will consider in future projects!
