Umm.
I was all set to take French1, 2, and 3 as my foreign language requirement (you have to take up through Level 3). Iâd taken French in high school, but I thought I was due for a series of refresher courses and couldnât âtest outâ of any of them.
I just took the online French placement test. The good news is that now French1 and French2 have been eliminated from my curriculum.
The bad news is that now I have to jump right into French3.Â
I didnât know how to word this post without it sounding like a HumbleBrag, but I seriously didnât plan on jumping into a college-level 3 French class.Â
Have you ever heard of duolingo? Â It should be on your radar for two reasons:
Luis von Ahn, the computer scientist who invented it, is a genius, and the software is fascinating. http://youtu.be/cQl6jUjFjp4
More practically, it could help you brush up on your French.
Good luck!
Doctor: What's wrong with your back? Louis CK: It hurts. Doctor: My professional diagnosis is your back hurts. Louis CK: Well what can I do about it? Doctor: Nothing. Louis CK: Nothing? Doctor: The problem is you're using it wrong. The back isn't done evolving yet. You see the spine is a row of vertebrae. It was designed to be horizontal and people came along and used it vertical. It wasn't meant for that, so the disks get all floppy, swolen, pop out left, pop out right. It's gonna take another i'd say 20000 years to get straightened out. Until then it's going to keep hurting. Louis CK: So that's it? Doctor: It's an engineering design problem. It's a misallocation. We were given a clothesline but are using it as a flagpole. Louis CK: So, so what should I do? Doctor: Use your back as it was intended. Walk around on your hands and feet. Or accept the fact that your back is going to hurt sometime. Be very grateful for the moments that it doesn't. Every second spent without back pain is a lucky second. String enough of those lucky seconds together and you have a lucky minute.

Donât forget: Dallas Buyers Club is just a movie, nothing more. It might be a really great movie (given its Oscar nominations and McConaugheyâs winning Best Actor, it almost certainly is), but itâs not fact. Itâs a fictionalized account of manâs battle with AIDS that is designed to entertain and uplift more than to teach about history and science.

As The Terminator celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, the film continues to raise important questions. What are the risks to humanity of ascendant machine intelligence? How does a society correct the catastrophic missteps in its own past? And, most important, what the dickens is that weird time signature in...
