Steampunk’d

It’s a work-in-progress AU that a friend and I have been thinking about.

The basic gist: Steampunk meets Alchemy in 19th-century aesthetic, combining the mundane with the extraordinary in an anthology of one-shots.

It features an aviator, an inventor, a perpetual motion machine, two brothers, three kingdoms, war, and a whole lot of musings.

Yes, I don’t write frequently or consistently.  I also cannot draw, for the life of me, so any future updates will be in the form of short stories that may either amuse or bemuse (you).

Read with caution.  Or not, it’s up to you.

Aviator

I had a dream.

It was vivid, yet not a little bit blurred.   In it I took an old biplane out for a spin, soaring high enough to touch the clouds and see the people below in the size of ants.

The sensation of the howling wind, the tightness of my goggles, the hum of power beneath my fingertips … it was beautiful, but sad at the same time.

Because I’m alone in the journey.  There was just me and the kind blue skies.

I pounced on every nearby cloud, did barrel rolls and fought imaginary planes in an intense, one-person dogfight.

I saw below me an endless expanse of imperious waves, rolling plains and flower beds, vibrant towns and waving townspeople, even the desert where once I would have landed upon a dune and spent my days with a royal petit.

I was the king of the world, ruler of the skies, subject to none and free to go where I wish.

But then I remember I have no home to call my own.

I am alone, in the frankest sense of the word.

And it was with this realization that I woke up.
