she’s the one who sees love through tinted glasses. well, her and flynn. he sees it as a weapon. something he’d not experienced much of due to his anger issues and his apparent dark mood. but elsie has never let that get in the way. “ i don’t know that can even happen. i’ve never gone past a first date. and everyone whose met me would write me off...i don’t want to fuck this up. ”

what about her anger? what about meles’ anger? elsie holds her tongue and averts her gaze from her brother still. she knows he’s thinking of all those things too. he’s taken on so much more of a leadership role following nei’s attempted coup, and he has to be the one making these tough decisions. ❝ i don’t want to ignore their anger, but i don’t want to ignore what happened to us either. she is dead because of her actions. how dare they behave as if they’ve been wrongly treated? ❞ the death of demana’s princess ( by elsie’s hand no less ) has been a source of contention on all sides. ❝ do you really think they’ll call for war? ❞
nei’s actions had forever changed them all. elsie had been forced to be the killing blow. ashea had not been able to go in the library since. ciar has taken on a very active role in training the new guards. making sure they’re safe. flynn still has nightmares of her control and any music he hears causes him to stiffen and panic. their anger wasn’t allowed to cloud the judgement of meles even if the people would stand with them. they have to think of their place in the seven kingdoms now. “ they might. we’re seen as being in a weak position right now. none of us are trained to run a kingdom and we’re all healing from the damage she did. if we didn’t have the protection of the dragon knights i think they’d have attacked already. ”

“pasha, i don’t think you can scare demena away from our borders with glares alone. they are right in their anger against meles even if it’s because their princess attempted to conquer us and nearly slaughtered our family. we cannot ignore their anger that she is now dead. we can only attempt peaceful resolutions and prepare for war should that fail.”

❝ steven? ❞ layla wipes her eyes, staring intently at the rearview mirror. she’d seen something and she thinks she knows what it was, but she needs to see it again, just to be sure… and there! the glimmer of headlights rising and diving over the crest of a sand dune. she doubts they’re out here for a scenic tour. she leans out the open window and speaks louder, ❝ steven, get in the van. ❞ she doesn’t want to start it up until he’s in, in case they’ve not been spotted yet; their own headlights will be enough of a signal.
he wants this to be over. for his life to return to normal or for at least this new one to not be so fucking shitty. but clearly, that’s not a choice right now. “ m’here. ” he mumbles, trying not to put his own feelings on her shoulders. after all, he’s just the guy stuck in the middle of all this. the worm. he stands and spots the headlights. “ oh shit, they’re coming for us. they must know we’re still out here. ” he all but dives into the van.

“Like I said, I’m good at making enemies,” she shrugged once more. It’s not like she really cared about being on someone’s shit list. There were plenty of people that wanted her dead, and if the world was really going to end, then none of that mattered. Layla couldn’t help but to laugh at his poor backup plan. “And if it actually is Ammit? How do you plan to kill a god? Cause I don’t even think Khonshu can give you that kind of power. Harrow is one thing, and I’ll gladly put him in the ground for you, but we’re dead if we don’t stop him from opening that tomb.”
“he’ll have to do some sort of ritual i’m guessing to get it open. we work out how to stop that and it’s over. either that or we get the other avatar’s to see what we do.” if someone else witnessed harrow’s attempts at the tomb perhaps the other gods would actually step in. look beyond themselves and actually do something. “what do you know about it?”

“Yeah, but we both see how that turned out,” she replied somewhat smugly. In her mind, things had gone a lot smoother when they worked together instead of against one another. Layla shrugged at his comment about her baiting him. “Maybe, but I don’t really see the point in filing for divorce in the middle of all of this. Besides, those papers are back home. So unless you want to travel back just to make it official before the end of the world, be my guest. Otherwise, you’re stuck with me until this is over.” At least she knew there was some part of him that wanted her around. Steven seemed pretty adamant that he’d never divorce her.
“not like you can just leave now. harrow knows about you.” she’s in this now. but what about the threat AFTER harrow? khonshu seems adamant that if marc were to give up the suit it would pass to layla and he can’t let that happen. can’t let her become the monster he is. the one that has fractured apart. “come on, we need to get to the tomb. if we can’t stop him from opening the tomb we can sure kill whatever comes out.”

yeah, she’s still mad. from the moment she turned up outside that storage facility to find her husband, she’s been trying to get answers. she’s been trying to find some kind of closure for the gaping hole his disappearance had ripped open in her life. the answers she has aren’t really the ones she wants, and have led to more questions. she pulls herself up into the van and sinks into the seat, staring at the rolling dunes still ahead of them. right now, the dark sky and the shadows inside the vehicle are obscuring her face, protecting her from scrutiny. she can drop the defenses just a little bit; her eyes can water, like they had when he’d said she didn’t know him at all, only this time she doesn’t have to school her expression so he doesn’t notice.
it’s not going to be a fun time. not when they’re all walking on egg shells and avoiding the fact that marc walked out on his wife. they’re not going to look at it until it’s all over. if they live. it’s not a guarantee that they even will. especially with khonshu gone. steven sits down in front of the car and picks up the wing mirror marc tore off. “ you know, you’re being a real arse right now. ” the reflection simply rolls his eyes back. “ seems it’s all i can be to you two. ”

“What about you? All this stuff that you’ve gotten yourself into is insane. You can’t honestly think you can do it all by yourself.” If anything was evident of that, it was how easily she swooped in and handed him exactly what he needed while he struggled to obtain it. “I don’t think I’m asking for much, Marc. All I want is the truth. Something you apparently have never been able to give me.” Layla let out a tired sigh and leaned back in her seat. “Listen, if you really want it, I’ll sign those divorce papers as soon as we’re done here and Harrow is stopped. Though, that doesn’t mean I’ll stop being in danger. I have a habit of making enemies, and it’s been like that long before I met you.”
“been doing it by myself this whole damn time.” it’s not like khonshu is a new development. she’s known about the suit nearly as long as she’s known him. the main secret is most of his past and steven. pretty big secret, mate. she deserved to know. i deserved to know. great, now he has both steven AND layla lecturing him on his choices. “you’re baiting me and i fucking know it.” he runs a hand over his face. fuck, he’s exhausted. “no guarantee we’re walking out of this. harrow probably has bullets prepared for us.”

❝ i don’t think what i want matters right now. ❞ she thinks or at all for a second but she knows that’s her personal bitterness over the way her husband’s been behaving. layla needs to push that away right now. their problems aren’t as important as the fate of the world, as marc has reminded her in his quest to avoid communicating about their problems. ❝ finish your canteen, steven. ❞ she turns to get back in their vehicle.
she’s still mad. "wow, marc, you’re winning every bleeding award for observation right now.” he mutters and takes a long drink from the canteen. steven is honestly surprised he hasn’t had a request to tag out but then again marc is probably hiding from the wrath of his wife. which isn’t fair on either steven OR layla. she deserves better. why do you think i left?

His words stabbed at her heart. Him calling her reckless as if loving him was the stupidest thing she had ever done. Her eyes stung with tears and she forced herself to keep them at bay. “No, but you are my husband. I never wanted half of you. I always wanted the whole thing. Whether it was good or bad, dangerous or safe, I didn’t care. Cause I had you. If all we were was just some beautiful lie, then why did you marry me? Why propose? Why waste your time with any of it?” She wasn’t the only one to blame for this situation. After all, it’s not like she forced him to marry her. He had chosen that just as much as she did.
this is going to be an ugly fight. and they’re good at that. it’s part of what drew them together. fire fighting fire. both wanting to be right and not wanting to be wrong. “ for what it’s worth, i’m sorry. i never meant for any of this shit to happen. suppose it don’t do shit to make you feel better but it wasn’t just some big fuck you. it wasn’t a lie. fuck, layla, it wasn’t a lie. love makes you do shit you never thought you’d do even though you know how ugly it’s gonna turn out. i proposed cause i love you. but that’s gonna get you killed and i’m not gonna do that to you. ”
