But what about a sci-fi movie where it's just casually mentioned that one of the characters is an android or a cyborg? And like that's it. They don't turn evil. They have emotions. They feel pain. They don't have super strength. No one even treats them differently it's just a few minor references like "Oh, guys, I need to charge. Goodnight," or "Shit that new upgrade is giving me a headache."
“Alright, sweetheart, you ready?”
“Ready. Yeah, as I’ll ever be.”
“Then let’s get this done.”
“Wait---! M-Mom...”
“What? What is it, Amy?”
“I... I love you.”
“... I love you too, sweetheart.”
After discovering each other beyond the wreckage of the destroyed space station, Ellen Ripley and her daughter, Amanda, realize a computer malfunction with a cascading effect was what kept Ripley’s escape pod from traveling to the frontier and thus drifting in space for fifteen years. Now, unable to go back into cryosleep, the two conclude that their only hope lies in returning to the remnants of Sevastopol Station on a salvaging mission.
As they approach the debris field, their motion sensors begin to detect several dozen signatures moving about on the station. Each far too quickly to be humans. Terrified, but determined, the mother-daughter duo create a plan: Amanda will stay aboard the life boat and monitor the sensors and help guide her as Ellen attempts to retrieve the necessary components to make their repairs...
As Ellen approaches the docking bay, she opens her comm frequency. “Alright, sweetheart, you ready?” Her voice echoes through the small ship’s badly damaged intercom system, with so much static Amanda can hardly hear her.
“Ready,” repeats Amanda, sounding numb, “Yeah, as I’ll ever be.”
It tears Ellen apart to hear the fear in her daughter’s voice, and thinking about what had been robbed from them both. Stealing herself, she answers, “Then let’s get this done.”
Suddenly, Amanda’s voice comes over the speaker with a panic in her tone that set’s Ellen’s teeth on edge. “Wait--! M-Mom...”
“What? What is it, Amy?” terror makes her limbs feel frozen. Her first horrified thought: Have they gotten aboard somehow? Are they here?
No one had called her ‘Amy’ in over a decade.
With a shake in her voice, sounding unsure of herself for the first time since they’d reunited, Amanda answers, “I... I love you.”
Relief and pain flood the mother’s system. How wonderful and how terrible to hear those words from her daughter’s voice, sounding so unfamiliar and uncomfortable, as if those three words hadn’t lived together in a single breath for so long, they’d forgotten each other.
Ellen takes a breath, “... I love you too, sweetheart.”
She engages the release to open the doors between the escape pod and the badly damaged station, pausing briefly and saying into her comm, “And Amy?”
“Yeah?” Now it was her daughter’s turn to sound worried.
“...The bike.”
“---What?”
“The bicycle. That you wanted for your eleventh birthday. The one I’d told you we couldn’t afford... I got it for you.” She’d just never gotten home for the chance to give it to her.
There was a sad, almost disbelieving laugh from the other end of the transmission, and Amanda breathed out, “I knew it...”
