Cassandra had been wandering around. It was unsafe, she knew, but she had her trusty blade strapped to her back in case any Z wanted to come out and play. The girl ran a hand through her dark curls, letting out a sigh. Cassie spotted an all too familiar figure. Watching 10K shoot zombies was like watching a unicorn roam around, mesmerizing. “Somehow you still make it look like magic,” The girl spoke as she quietly approached him.
10k lifted his head away from his gun and looked back. “It’s nothing,” the boy shrugged shyly and grinned before standing up and giving her a hug. It amused him how much taller he was compared to her. He felt like a giant. “How’d you find your way here?”
“Swear you could shoot a gnat’s left nut off from a hundred yards.” Doc had spent weeks looking for the little genius. Maybe even a month. It wasn’t like it was easy to tell nowadays. “How’ve you been, kid?”
10k jerked his head at the sound of an all too familiar voice. A huge smile formed on his face and he stood up, not knowing if he should hug the old hippie or not. “I’ve just been killing z’s,” he looked out at the zombies, then back to Doc. “What about you and the group?”
“I probably would have been zombie bait if not for you, so I think that’s pretty lucky.” Iris laughed a little before looking down at her feet. The small girl wrapped one her hands around the strap on her bag before smiling up at him. “Thanks. Not many people around here are willing to teach a seventeen year old how to use a gun. I’ve been told it’ll ruin my knife skills.” A sharp laugh left her lips. “Doubt it though.” Her face twisted in confusion as she heard his name. “I’m not going to question it. 10K, alright. Name’s Iris.”
10k gave her an awkward smile. “It’s no problem.” His eyebrow furrowed, a z drawing his attention towards the gate and away from the girl. He pulled out his knife and struck it in the head once, watching as its body fell limp. “3,058--It doesn’t ruin knife skills.” 10k turned to her and grinned before walking back. “Nice to meet you, Iris.”
“Alright.” Beth nodded, tossing the bar back onto her bag not bothering to put it inside the bag. She laughed lightly before nodding along with him. “That’s a lot of walkers t’ kill.” Her eyes scanned over the road below. “What happens when ya get to your goal??”
“Yeah, I know. Somehow, though, I think I’ll have plenty of time to reach that amount.” He let a small, hoarse laugh before pausing. “I’ll have to change my name.” 10k shrugged.
The brunette girl looked over her shoulder at the gate before nodding back to him. “Lucky us.” She smirked slight before shifting on her feet. “I’ve never been good with guns. Maybe you can teach me some time.” She asked before clapping her hands together. “That is if you want to.”
10k laughed. “Yeah,” he looked out at the Z’s walking around outside. “Lucky us.” His eyes darted back to her and he nodded his head. “Yeah, I suppose I could teach you a few things on guns.” He smiled. “Training starts whenever you’d like.-- I’m 10k, by the way.”
Iris pushed the gate open slightly slipping her way inside before grabbing her pack and pulling it through. Slamming it shut behind. “Fine thanks to you.” She flashed the boy a smile. “Where’d you learn to shoot like that??” She questioned as she reached for the beaten pack, tossing it over her shoulder.
10k met the girl down by the gate, returning her smile. He blushed a little at her comment and shrugged. “Out there,” he nodded towards the gate. “Found a sniper rifle not far into the first year, and here I am now.” He chuckled a little, a small smirk formed out of pride.
Beth laughed slightly before nodding her head. Dropping one leg over the edge to sit down. Her hand slipped up to pull her small bag from her shoulder. “What’s the goal??” She asked as she pulled out a small snack bar, holding it out to him. It had been a long day, she figured that he was in need of something to eat. “That is if ya don’t mind me asking.”
10k smiled at her generosity. “No, thanks,” he began. “I’ve got plenty of snacks in here.” The boy patted his bag, the sound of wrappers with each tap. “10,000.” He answered nonchalantly before taking another drink of the water.
Lexa did flinch when the gun went off and watched the next walker fall to the ground. “That’s what they are.” Lexa said plainly. The brunette looked between the man and the dead walker on the ground. “Why are you keeping count?” She asked tilting her head. “They’re dead, it doesn’t matter.”
10k stood up and turned to her, giving her a small shrug. “The group I was originally with called them Z’s.” He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “Just something to keep me sane, I guess,” he slung his gun over his shoulder. “I figure if I have some sort of goal, living wouldn’t seem so pointless.” 10k gave her a crooked smile and walked past her to the ladder and began climbing down.
Lexa had been doing survey of the wall that morning as she stumbled across a newcomer that was currently lined up with a gun aimed. Her eyes followed from him to whatever he was shooting at. Her face didn’t change as she walked up behind him and asked, “3,056 walkers?”
10k didn’t turn to look, instead he had his aim set on another z stumbling around. A pull of the trigger and the zombie’s head flew back. “3,057, now.” He finally looked up at the woman standing behind him, his eyebrows scrunching together. “You call them walkers? Never heard that one before.” He leaned his back against the wall beside him, trying loosen up his muscles which were more tense than he originally thought.
Beth was climbing the ladder, carrying a bottle of water in one hand. Slowly she smiled as she walked over to the boy, listening to him speak. ❝ Nice shot. ❞ Beth looked out at the fallen body before holding the bottle out to the boy. “Why ya countin’??”
The sound of a soft voice caught his attention away from the walking corpses and he looked back to see the source. Pride filled his chest and the smirk on his face grew a little. “Thank you,” he graciously took the bottle, just now realizing how dehydrated he actually was. 10k took a gulp and twisted the cap back on, shifting into a more relaxed sitting position. “I have a goal of how many zombies I’m going to kill.”
Iris was out trying to find a few supplies for the group since they were running low of certain things. Her heart stopped as she looked at the zombie in front of her. She mumbled something under her breath, ready to turn around and run the other way when she heard the shot. Spinning around, she looked up at the sniper that saved her, a small smile flashed on her face. ❝ Thanks!! ❞ She shouted up at him before jogging back over to the gate.
10k smiled down at the girl and nodded. He grabbed his gun and slung it over his shoulder as he made his way down. The sniper wasn’t much of a conversationalist, but he figured he should at least get to know the people he would practically be living with for who knows how long. He approached the girl with a soft smile on his face. “Hey, you okay?”
10k found himself a nice little perch where he could see out at all the zombies roaming around aimlessly like drunkards. Losing his group was rough on him, but he was lucky enough to find another group who seemed to have this little safe haven locked securely and they welcomed him with open arms. However, he wasn’t at his goal of killing 10,000 zombies, yet. “3,056,” he mumbled with a small smirk after sniping a z to the ground in one shot.
