Ricky’s tacos. N Main St and Llewellyn St. 1 fish, 1 shrimp. $6. Cash only. 3 salsas and a cream are available to add. They show up on the weekends and only serve fish and shrimp tacos. A testimony to simplicity these deep fried treats are the best fish/shrimp tacos I’ve had in LA. Served in a lightly fried tortillas with peppers and cabbage.
Mondo taco. La Brea and San vincente. 1 thailicous, 1 Spanish fly, 1 fancy fish. $10.88. Free hot sauce. Well thought out little meals in taco form. They are doing something different here and it's delicious. Tortillas hand made. Chicken in thailicous a bit dry. Very friendly staff.
Best fish tacos in Encinitas. Hillhurst and camero. 2 fish tacos. $3.50+tax. Make your own taco bar. A good deep fried fish taco, a meal worthy of its title.
Teds #3. Jefferson and normandie. 1 chicken, 1 steak. $4. No free sides. Healthy portions in large tortillas, easily the equivalent of 4 small tacos. Meat slightly seasoned and not overlooked. Nice spicy salsa. Only drawbacks are the iceberg lettuce and the steak had a piece of tendon in it. Still a good filling meal.
El Unico Pollo Taquero Mexican Grill. Santa Monica and Virgil. 1 fish, 1 al pastor. $3.78. Free green salsa. Fish fresh, lightly breaded, and deep fried. Couples well with dressing. Al pastor comes in healthy chunks and not over cooked as I find most places do. Green chili a great addition, a good amount of spice.
Barragans. Sunset and echo park ave. 1 chicken, 1 beef, 1 potato. $3 on Monday special. Free salsa. Crispy fried shells, melted cheese and wonderfully shredded cabbage make for a treat of a taco. Warm potato matched well with preperation. A little heavier than your typical taco, but a satisfying treat.
Reel Inn. PCH and Topanga Canyon Ln. 1 fish, 1 shrimp. $8.43. Free lemon and salsas. Simple tacos in large corn tortillas. Fish done plainly without deep frying or seasoning. Shrimp a bit overwhelmed with lettuce tomato and cheese. Both needed the lemon and tabanero sauce provided.
La Placita cafe. Main st and Cesar Chavez. 2 chicken, 2 pork. $4.31. Free lime. Lightly fried tortillas are crisp but not greasy. Struck by how light and healthy they taste.
Los Compadres. Cesar Chavez and New High St. 2 tongue, 2 pork. $5. Free chips, red salsa, lime, jalapeño. The sautéed onions with the tongue is a perfect match. Pork well seasoned and greasy but not overly so. Went well with the salsa. Overall a notch above. Note B health grade.
Wahoos fish tacos. Manhattan Ave and Manhattan beach. 1 veggie, 1 fish, 1 pork. $8.32. Free lemons, limes, hot, teriyaki, and soy sauces. Assorted veggies made for a nice meal, fish a little dry but good still, worked well with lime.Thin sturdy corn tortillas.
El Jalapeño. Vermont and Francis Ave. 2 chicken, 1 carnitas, 1 lengua. $5.87. Free radishes, limes, extra salsa. Deliciously seasoned chicken and perfectly cooked tongue. Salsa is a bit viscous but the hearty double tortillas handle it well. They gave me asada instead of carnitas. Asada was fine- a good taco but not as special.
La playita 7 mares. Sunset and descanso. 3 shrimp tacos. $5.19 (at Monday special). Free lime. Nicely toasted tortillas, shrimp are decent size and nicely cooked. Very subtle flavors, found the accompanying lime a welcome if not needed addition.
Burrito King. Alvarado and Sunset. 2 fish, 1 carnitas. $5.84 (add 18 cents for drink deal). Free lemon and hot and mild salsa. Fork needed. Tortillas are soggy and overfilled with meat. Carnitas done well but could use more seasoning, hot sauce makes up for it. Fish nicely seasoned but very wet.
El pollo loco. Crenshaw and W 28th. 2 chicken al carbon. $2.81. Free tomato salsa. A little dry and bland. Meh, nothing special.
Chabelita Tacos. Western and 20th. 1 lengua, 1 carnitas, 1 asada. $5.93. Free extra hot sauce. Tortillas are packed with meat and different salsas tailored for each meat. Extra salsas delicious but not needed with the well spiced tacos. Asada meat quality seemed a bit low and overcooked. Fun murals all around building.
Taqueria el Atacor. Figueroa and Amabel. 4 taco special. 2 barbacoa, 1 buche, 1 tongue. $5.17. Free sides: red and green salsa, escabeche. Standard good tacos. Flavorful and spicy salsas and escabeche. Tortillas cooked perfect amount.
Pinches tacos. Sunset and havenhurst dr. 1 pollo mole, 1 al pastor. $5.44. Free lime and hot sauce. Mole incredible, pastor good but not amazing... Needed the sauce the sauce that came with it. Good tacos. Caveat: a bit drunk.
