Warnings: Jonghyun-centered, fluff, just Jonghyun coming home and going to sleep after a long day
Note: Writing has always been a way for me to process things, so I wanted to write a short drabble just to put some good energy about Jonghyun on my blog because most of what I write is horror/suspense. No one might read this, and thats okay, Iām mostly just posting this so that way if I start to feel sad again, I can go back and read this. This is a short, fluffy piece with no trigger warnings, but if youāre not ready to read anything about him, please just scroll past. Out of respect for anyone who doesnāt wish to see anything like this right now, Iām putting the entire drabble under the cut. Also, my ask box is open if anyone who is grieving wants to anonymously, or not, put their feelings out there.Ā
He was tired. The soul-crushing, weary-boned sort of tired that could only come from too long of a day and too little sleep. He was ready to fall into his bed, turn off all the lights, and fall into sleep. And so he allowed the exhaustion to have free reign of his body, eyes watering with a gaping yawn that popped his jaw, but only slightly. He toed off his shoes, placed them in a neat little row with all of the others, and closed the front door behind him, mindful of the noise. It was late. The lights were turned off, shrouding the entire place in impenetrable darkness, but he had long since been able to find his way around the dorm with little aid and so he did just that, legs carrying him to his room. Past the living room where he could see Minhoās faint outline on the couch asleep. Past the kitchen where he could almost hear the phantom noise of a rowdy dinner, space for five but only four in attendance. Past the bathroom where he could hear the shower running, Jinkiās calm voice humming under the rumble of the spray. Past the closed door where he knew Kibum was either sleeping or trying to. And then finally, to a closed door under which no light shone.
He turned the cold knob under his warm palm slowly, careful to avoid the creaks in the door that he knew had been there long before they had moved in, as well as the ones that they had inspired themselves. Taeminās sleep-limp form was a familiar presence in his twin bed across from Jonghyunās own, and it instantly triggered that same exhaustion that he had felt the moment he walked through the door. He was ready to sleep.
He shed his clothes one by one and only once he was bare did he slide between his cool sheets, shivering once and then sighing, all the air seemingly leaving him at once. His eyes felt impossibly heavy, so he didnāt bother trying to keep them open, turning his face into the soft pillow beneath his head. It smelled like Taemin, which probably meant that Taemin had stolen Jonghyunās memory foam pillow for himself. Jonghyun didnāt mind. Sometimes, he stole Taeminās goose feather pillows, too. Before long, he could feel his thoughts beginning to drift off to that cottony space between waking and sleeping, and he didnāt fight it. His heart was beating a slow, steady rhythm against the skin of his chest and his head was a free floating thing. He felt like he had been wrapped in gossamer and set adrift.
He was tired, and it was late, and so he sunk into his dreams, bones lifted of weight for that brief second of free falling before he tipped over into unconsciousness. Briefly, before it happened, he recalled the distinct feeling of calm that washed over him, and for a while, the tide felt far, far away and for a while, he was at peace.

Author Commentary:
So, like usual, I went into this fic with a pretty clear goal in mind: I really wanted to write a fic told from the point of view of a character who is only moderately likeable but still easy to relate to. It was important to me that the reader feel like they donāt necessarily agree with the decisions that Taemin was making, but be able to understand why he was making them. I also really liked the idea of a character who gets a superpower which could have been used for some good, but instead just makes their life more complicated because they use their power for selfish reasons. I was heavily inspired by the movie The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, so I really wanted to base Taeminās character around the main character of that movie. Of course, a lot of Taeminās selfishness/overall teenaged way of thinking appeared organically, but I started off thinking about Taemin in that way. I also wanted to focus on the idea of Taemin as an unreliable narrator because Iāve recently been really invested in this way of writing. Its challenging to write from the perspective of someone who is only giving the reader half of the information that they need, but its also really fun! I think this is what contributed to my overall decision to take a lighter/more comical approach with the tone of the story in the beginning before switching to a sudden darker theme. I wanted the reader to feel like they were getting information alongside Taemin, so I wanted the reader to feel as blindsided by everything that was happening as Taemin was.Ā
As far as the side characters go, I was really interested in crafting a world and relationships that are realistic and also feel like they have some substance to them. I rely pretty heavily on characterization, so I really wanted to explore how far I could take characterization in terms of overall character development. I really enjoy reading stories where the side characters are able to stand on their own and donāt seem to be just there to elevate the main character, so it was important to me that every character have their own unique identity and plotlines.Ā
As far as choosing Kibum for the primary antagonist (if you want to think about him that way since in a lot of ways, Taemin is his own antagonist) I just really like writing Kibum as an antagonist since I feel like the way I enjoy characterizing him, is as a character who sees things in very black and white ways. It just made natural sense of Kibum to be the character who would be putting all of this together in his head. And for the ending of the fic, I was very inspired by the movie Silence of the Lambs in that you think that youāre on the same page as the main character, only to find out that the narrator is very unreliable.Ā
And finally, as far as the mind reading ability goes, I really wanted it to just be something that was going on in the background. I didnāt want the story to become a story just about superpowers because I think that the main point of the story was all about how even though Taemin had this power, it didnāt make him consider the thoughts of others any more than he already had. So I wanted the superpowers to just be something happening in the background that the reader just had to accept.Ā

I was so excited to see that one of the pictures that inspired ouroboros was from howls moving castle. That was exactly how I imagined Jinki while reading it. I absolutely love this fic, it's so different especially for the pairing. Thank you for writing it. I'm behind though, I have a couple chapters before I'm caught up. :(
Iāve just always loved Howlās transformed form and when I saw that fanart i wsa like ahhh this is so cool and i just started thinking about writing something based on that piece. Most of what I write comes from art or other media (like if youve read my sbb fic he who touched the sun, that was mainly inspired by the hozier music videoĀ āsomeone newā)Ā
