I rolled off my bed and quickly fluttered to the kitchen, laptop in hand. “Baby! Tae! Look!” I half yelled, out of excitement. “What’s up?” He walked up next to me, a curious look on his face. I showed him my laptop screen. On it, there was pictures of the cutest puppies I had ever seen. “Look at them! They’re so cute!” Taehyung lets out a giggle, “They are! Look at that one’s little paws!” He slightly scrunches up his face and cooed at the screen, pretending to rub it’s adorable face. “Can you imagine having a cute little puppy running around the apartment?” I say, giggling and fawning over the screen. “Yeah!” Tae says, looking at me. “I know, that would be nice… maybe one day we can.” I say, thinking something like that could only happen in dreams. “Why not now?” Tae says to me, causing me to jerk my head to face him. “What?!” I begin to smile. Wow. I didn’t think he’d actually go for it. “I said, why not now?” He smiles back at me. I start to get excited. “Wait, are you being serious Tae? You really want to adopt a dog now?” He giggles and starts to grab my hips casually. “Well not now. But maybe tomorrow we can go to a shelter and look around?” I start to feel jittery with excitement. “Really Tae?!” The smile on my face was growing wide. He laughs, “Yes, (Y/N), really!” He smiles big as well. I squeal and wrap my arms around him. “Thank you thank you thank you~!” I say, jumping up and down. Tae laughs again, hugging me back. “I’ve actually been thinking about this for a while now. I’ve been needing to ask you, but you beat me to it!” He pulls away from me, “We’ll go tomorrow, okay?” I still couldn’t wipe my giant grin off my face. “Okay! Thank you Tae!” I go onto my tiptoes to give him a kiss on the cheek. He smiles smugly and giggles at my action. He bends down to kiss me back. “Let’s go make a list of what we need, and we can go out later and buy them.” “Okay~!” I reply, happy dancing my way back to our room.
Hand in hand, Taehyung and I walked into our local animal shelter. One of the workers kindly showed us around and asked to assist us in picking out a puppy to adopt. “Do have any specific breeds you were looking for?” she asks. “Uh, no not really. We were mostly planning on just seeing which puppy catches our eyes.” Tae says, smiling politely. “Alright, let me know if you have any questions.” She says, smiling back. We both nod as she gives us some space.
We walked past each puppy. I can’t deny the fact that I found all of them so cute. “Can we just take all of them home, Tae?” I say, flashing my puppy dog eyes (pun not intended) He laughs at me and says, “You know I would love that, but I don’t think our landlord would.” I jokingly pout and he pinches my cheeks. “Come on, let’s keep looking.”
After about 10 or 15 minutes of Tae and I looking around and aw-ing at each puppy, there was one little pup that caught our eyes.
It was a small wiener dog. The dog had a fairly large scar on it’s left side, and across it’s eye as well. I frowned, “Look at that one Tae, it’s hurt.” Despite the dog’s damaged appearance, the dog happily trotted up to us and barked to us. A smile immediately spread across my face. I bent down and put my hands up against the glass. The puppy then stood on it’s hind legs and touched my hands through the glass. I giggled as it began to lick the glass. “We found her injured on the street. She looked about 3 or 4 weeks old. Those scars came from an attack from another animal, we assumed.” Tae and I looked at each other with sad eyes. “Don’t worry! Once we treated her and she was able to begin recovering, she was the happiest little pup we’d ever met!” The worker said, smiling. Tae and I both awed as we played with the puppy through the glass. “Would like me to take her out?” the worker asks. “Yes! Please!” Tae and I say in unison.
She unlocks the glass container and lets out the puppy, she trots towards us, barking happily. “Oh my gosh~!” I go to pick her up and and she immediately begins licking my face non stop. Tae laughs, “I think she likes you!” I laugh too, and hand her to Tae, where the puppy starts to lick Tae as well. “I’ll bring you guys some toys so you can spend some time with her.” The worker says, smiling, and walks out briefly.
After spending about 20 minutes with the puppy, Tae and I became really attached. “Tae.” He mumbles in response, keeping his attention towards the dog. “I think she’s the one.” Tae stops and looks at me. He nods, “Yes, she is definitely the one.” We both smile at each other. I turn towards her, “How about it? Do you want to come home with us? Do you want us to be your mommy and daddy?” The puppy flops on her back and sticks her tongue out adorably. We both laugh. “I think that’s a yes” Tae says. And right on queue, the worker pops her head inside the room. “Everything going okay?” she says sweetly. “Yes, we’ve actually decided we would like to adopt this cutie.” Tae says, smiling wide. The worker smiles, “Great! I’ll get her ready to be taken home with you guys, and you two can go to the front to fill out the paperwork.” The worker gestures towards the door as we bow to thank her and walk out. Tae grabs my hand and gives it a squeeze. We both smile at each other once again.
“Alright, last step. What would you like to name her?” Another worker said to us while we were finalizing the adoption process. I look at Tae, “Any ideas?” He nods. “Yeah, since she was so happy all the time. I was thinking we could name her Joy.” A grin spreads across my face, and I nod towards the worker who’s smiling as well. “That’s a lovely name.” she says. She writes it down and stamps the paper. “Alright, just take this folder with all your paperwork and show the stamp to the lady in that door, and you’re all set to take her home!” we bow our heads and smile. “Thank you so much!” I smile. Tae and I hurried over to where she was, we were so excited! We showed the worker our papers and she smiled to us as she handed our new puppy to us in her carrier.
Smiling and giggling the whole way home, we pull up to our apartment. Tae takes her in her carrier as we walk into the apartment building. We hurried our way to the apartment, eager to show the puppy her new home. Tae hands me the carrier as he unlocks the door, opening it wide.
I quickly walked in and set the carrier down, opening it’s door. She timidly trudged her way out, careful of her new surroundings. “Go on, sweetie. Don’t be afraid.” I whisper to her. She makes it all the way out, and after sniffing around, she barks happily and trots around the apartment, tongue sticking out gleefully. I stand up and walk next to Tae, smiling. He smiles back at me, and I lay my head on his shoulder as be both watch her run around with a grin on our faces.
“Welcome home, Joy.”
