Weiss and Alex, eventually AU?

Small, hitched breaths invaded the silence of the bedroom. Awake in an instant, Alex peered over Weiss' shoulder to the door, her partner rumbling quietly and grabbing her arm. 

"Easy, it's just Minna." A second later the door creaked open, revealing their youngest as she stumbled towards the bed. Weiss shifted out from underneath her and to the edge, arms reaching down to pull the small girl up onto the mattress. "Aw, sweetheart, did you have a bad dream?" 

A sniffle and the child burrowed deep into her mother's chest. Alex chuffed in response, edging her way over the sheets until she could reach them. Coaxing Weiss back down, she settled Minna between them and ruffled her hair. 

"That's alright, you can sleep here with us tonight."

"Won't be reasonable and let me get a second fridge."

"Because we don't need a second fridge, you need to learn self control!"

"We wouldn't have this problem if you would let me get another fridge."

Alex wished she could say this was the first time she had found herself on the business end of Myrtenaster. But it wasn’t even close, her and Weiss’ history so scattered with clashing morals and fights that she practically had glyph marks stained into her skin.

Still, it didn’t prepare her for the suddenness of this assault. Alex had never seen it coming, the peaceful quiet of their home disrupted so quickly by the whirr of Myrtenaster’s chamber switching and the sequential chirp of dust twisting its existence into magic.

She barely had time to move, her stomach dropping as she lunged for Todd, tucking the small boy behind her frame and bracing for impact.

Except it didn’t come. Instead the air next to them light up with magic, the spell rocketing past them and into the wall.

A second passed, then two. Slowly Alex relaxed, releasing Todd from her hold and spinning on her heel to face their attacker. 

"Minna! How many times have we told you not to touch your mother’s sword!"

"I still find it odd that they killed her like that. Wasn't she somewhat in favor of faunus rights?"

"You're asking me that like I know how the leaders of White Fang think. Maybe they were hoping to send a message that being 'somewhat in favor' wasn't good enough."

"You two have been spending a lot of time together."

"Ruby is my partner and my team leader. I kind of have to spend a lot of time with her."
