A long time ago, I asked my younger brother- who has more tattoos than I- why he kept getting them.
It was midday, cloudy, both of us smoking as he drove home.
He glanced over to me and said, “It helps in bad situations, when you feel like you don’t have any control. If you can’t change something about the situation, you change something about yourself.” It’s been a recommendation I’ve passed on- if you can’t change something around you, change something about you. Tattoos, hair, piercings, something that lets you feel back in control.
I, personally, have found it helps when I feel like the world is crumbling around me– and lately, I have seriously felt that way.
So this was me taking control back.
And you know, when it’s visible I can just say “here’s lookin’ at you, kid!”
