Sam hears Mary’s approach before she speaks --- quiet footsteps, a walk that’s unconsciously stealthy from years of training and practice to the extent that it’s now just second nature. He smiles at her voice, and turns to face her. It’s only been a few hours since he saw her, but he still pauses to drink in her appearance, re-memorize every feature of her face that had faded in any way from weeks of separation.

“I’m okay, Mom.” he says, but although he attempts to keep the smile in place it fades a little. “Just...felt a little closed in. The bunker...not a lot of windows, you know?”
