He turns up outside the door of her apartment exactly on the dot at their agreed-upon meeting time. He has actually arrived earlier but waited at the corner of the block, staring intently at the clock hands on his watch until they finally moved, painstakingly, to rest over the numbers that he has been anticipating all week. He is so eager to see her again.
He is impeccably groomed; neat appearance, wearing her favorite cologne and dressed in pressed slacks, a dress shirt and leather loafers, well-tailored and fitted to his whipcord lean figure. Smart casual for a simple coffee date. A bouquet of bright sunflowers is cradled in the crook of his arms, the large yellow faces freshly cut, misted and cheerily upturned - her favorite. Hanging from his fingers, a paper bag filled with a traditional box of her favorite senbei and okaki, made that very morning from one of the best confectionary artisan shops in Seireitei. He's had to join the long queue just to get his hands on the best selections, but he thinks it is worth the trouble nevertheless; she must have missed having them by now.
He is fully equipped for a date, but still there is a tinge of anticipation and nervousness. The latter is atypical, but he cannot help feeling that way. Just as he cannot stop wondering how she is, how she will react to seeing him now, when the last image he has of her is her in tears, broken and defeated. Thoughts of that day inevitably send a flood of sadness flowing through him, this quiet grief because hurting her has always hurt him, too, and that has never been his intent. Still, that very slight hesitation is drowned out by the crashing yearning that clamors in his soul, just craving to see her again.
He presses the doorbell once, waits for her to answer. When the door finally opens, his gaze is soft upon her. That familiar, beloved face, her feline eyes glowing with surging sentiment not too different from his own, her energy caressing his...
Her name sits in his mouth like it is the most precious thing.
How have you been? I missed you. I love you.
After that phone call where he agreed to be her date, she has been eagerly waiting for the day to arrive. She had spent her entire therapy session just delighted about the change in her relationship. How excited she was- and… how nervous. She was extremely nervous that she would mess this up.
The last time she had seen him at the doorstep of this apartment, she had been in tears. She had invited him in for coffee, but he had just placed her bag inside the threshold and decided that he should leave. She knew that the reason for that was because he was afraid of the cycle being repeated over and over again. Her inflicting him pain, him calling her out, her apologising and him forgiving her.
This time though, she was not going to ask for his forgiveness until she could promise that she had changed. That this time, there was genuine reassurance from her side that she wouldn’t… wouldn’t draw blood every time she embraced him.
Her fingers paused as she brushed down her hair. Some… less than savoury thoughts had started to creep into her mind and she tried to chase them away. Yes. It was daunting to see Shinji again after so long, but it wasn’t like she could disappoint him in a cafe, right? It was a public place, nice, calm music and a good selection of desserts.
She took a few deep breaths. This will go well.
If she thinks well of herself, she can almost manifest these events. She has to will this to happen. That this date will leave him liking her. That his heart will be flipping madly at the thought of wanting to be with her again. That she has put in all this work for them. Not just for him, but herself, too.
Hiyori realises that if she only tries to do things for Shinji, she never tends to get far. It is why she understands his confusion. If she has loved him, why has he not felt it after all this time? Her heart squeezes painfully inside her chest.
It’s because, all this time, she’s been relying on him to love the loneliness out of her. He met her every step of the way, but she could not seem to stop hurting him with her words. She knew he disliked the name calling, but it still slipped out. She was… just pushing him away all this time. Trying to make herself believe she would always be the one who was left behind and abandoned.
But over the past few months, she had put work into reaching out to her lonely, younger self. Her little bratty, scrappy self that had been wounded too young and not really healed right. Not emotionally, anyway. But she was determined to pour more love into herself. And hopefully… things could work out between her other relationships, too.
I hope he wants to see me. I really hurt him.
She does not know for how long she sits with herself; fair hair falling across her shoulders and staring at the black kitty pin sliding into one side of her bangs. She wants to wow him for the date and has been consciously making an effort to look nicer. Lace-up ankle boots, a pretty red dress that stopped above the knee and her usual red jacket with her name stitched on it. She does look nice, she thinks. But looking nice wasn’t the end goal.
She can sense his reiatsu long before he arrives and is slightly amused that he has not rang the doorbell yet. Hiyori does a final check of her appearance before running towards the door to open it.
He looks like he has walked out of a movie poster. Dressed with clothes that fit him perfectly from his swimmer’s shoulders to his narrow waist. Her breath hitches in her throat when she catches sight of the bouquet of sunflowers. The occasions he brings her flowers are rare, but it never fails to move her. The brightness of the blooms lifts her spirit and some of that dread she had felt before… ebbs away.
Shinji would not turn up like this, with flowers and snacks… if he does not want this to work. She swallows the lump rising in her throat. Even after all that has happened between them, he still wants to make things work.
She manages a small, awkward smile. It is hard to know how to talk to him again after so long. Is she even the same, rambunctious girl she had been? Right now… she’s standing by her doorstep and unable to do or think anything beyond the fact that she loves him. She has always loved him. She cannot imagine a world where she would exist and not love Hirako Shinji.
But to express all that will take time. And a lot of effort.
Well, it was a good thing that time was on her side this time and not against it. She steps closer and can inhale his scent again after so long. If she had been less nervous, she would have pulled him into her arms and whisked him away with her. But right now, she knows it is important to make him feel safe with her, as opposed to ravishing him.
Once he handed the flowers, she went back inside to place them in a jar of water, but the snacks she accepted for their date. They could share them.
“Let’s go get some coffee. It’s been a long time.” Too long.
