2009 Spier Signature Series Pinotage
Available at: Cork Fine Wine, Spirits and Ales, Highlander Wine and Spirits, Wine Ink and The Cellar
Price: $13.50
We'll move our focus away from South America and bring it to South Africa to producer Spier and their 2009 Signature Series Pinotage. Pinotage is South Africa's red varietal and is a cross between two french varietal parents in Pinot Noir and Cinsault. This example is sourced from vineyards in the Western Cape from appellations Stellenbosch, Swartland and Breedekloof. This example saw 20% of its constituent blend aged in French oak for up to 8 months with the remainder being aged in stainless steel tanks and French oak staves.
We cooled this wine down to about 15 degrees Celcius before service without any decanting. Out of the bottle, this wine has a vibrant ruby red core with light body that is reminiscent of a pinot nior. Its bouquet is that of smoke, cherries and a whiff of mineralty. The palate is light and fresh with bright acidity and is Gamay-esque in terms of style. It provides a nice sweet cherry and finishes with a herbal, game tinged tannins. South African Pintoage is known for a sulphur, burnt tire character the nose / palate and while this wine has hints, they are under control. It has good acidity and finishes with medium length going dark with charred tannins.
Conclusion: Its pretty hard to argue the value here as this is a pretty good wine for under $15. Its inevitable problem is that the style of Pinotage won't appeal to all wine drinkers. That being said, if you have tired of Pinot Noir or need a kick that Gamay isn't providing then take a look into a Pinotage like this one from Spier. It might just be what you are looking for. 85 Points
