New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc by the campfire. Summer time throwback to lake living.
About last night - 2011 Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes Priorat. Terrasses is sourced from many of the region’s steepest and oldest vineyards—many of them north-facing to avoid the intense afternoon sun.
A 50-50 blend of Garnacha and Cariñena, the 2011 is in a spot for immediate enjoyment with velvety tannins, port like aromatics and wonderful integration of stewed red cherry, cola and herbal licorice notes. Outstanding for an entry level Priorat that shows its ability to age.
2020 Gaia Magari Bolgheri DOP Rosso Toscana - right bank Bordeaux blend of 50% Merlot and 25% Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon. Gorgeous aromatics - notes of violet, turned earth and cassis. Flavor explosion on the palate; youthful and extracted carried by fine acid and soft, powdery tannins. Young but approachable with 60 + minutes of decanting. Long life ahead here for those patient enough to wait. Available from @corkfinewineyyc and imported by @vendemmiavino
Iron fist in a velvet glove - 2019 Chateau De Beaucastel Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Rouge opened today at Cork Fine Wine in Calgary. - Nose initially reticent but opens to black olive tapenade, blackberry reduction, lavender and freshly brewed espresso. Initial attack soft but explodes on the mid and finish with a melange of black berry, dark chocolate and herbal spices that finishes for minutes. Acidity is on point and it is surprising how approachable this classical scored vintage is in its relative youth. A masterpiece that will only improve in the cellar over the next 30 years.
Happy #winewednesday - celebrating the sunshine with the 2020 @cvnevino Vińa Real Rosado #rioja - Blend of 70% Viura with 30% Tempranillo and Grenache. 12.5% leads to a light experience with peach and rhubarb carried by bright acid make this salmon/penny colored wine so light and drinkable that the contents disappear rather quickly. Fine value under $20 and available where fine wines are sold.
2004 @bodegasmuga Prado Enea Gran Reserva Rioja - a sensational expression showcasing mesquite, cola, blackberry, tobacco with notes of dried plum. Decanted, served at 17 deg C and evolved in the glass. The acidity is still lively and this has runway ahead.

Happy #winewednesday - a trio of 2016 @brancaia.winery Ilatraia IGT Tuscany. The 2016 vintage blends 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It scores between 95 to 96 points from famed critics @monicalarner of @wine_advocate and @james.suckling with Ms. Larner commenting “It tends to be more delicate and nuanced at the edges compared to a similar blend from the New World and is contoured and full but never heavy.” Mr. Sucklings tasting notes of “roasted blackberries, thyme, forest floor, pine needles, conifer, iodine, mint and light vanilla. Powerful and muscular, but agile and floral, this sweeps through decadent layers of dark fruit, while keeping the linear acidity constantly in view.” sealed the deal. Looking forward to visiting these in 2023 and beyond as they rest in the cellar. Thanks to their agent @selectwines_ab and retailer @corkfinewineyyc for sourcing. Magnums of the 2016 Ilatraia are still available in Alberta although stock is limited.
Cellar raiding again enjoying another bin end from @domaine_vincent_girardin in the 2005 vintage Cuvée Saint Vincent out of my favorite instrument in the GC Burgundy stem. From 45 year old vines located in the commune of Marsannay, this shows candied, ripe strawberry, faint baking spice, rhubarb, vanilla and wet clay on the nose. The attack shows a hint of sweetness from the strawberry / raspberry moving lithely to a core of bright acid while maintaining soft creaminess over the mid. The finish is clean and linear; tannin drying with good length. Not the most complex or emotive but a fine expression of aged Bourgogne Rouge.
2005 Paul Garaudet Monthelie 1er Cru Le Meix Bataille - treat from Burgundy Côte d’Or region. A fine example of mature Pinot Noir with rusted iron tinged raspberry, blood orange, sap, vanilla and cedar. Time has been kind; fine acid, soft creamy core with dark mineral kissed dry tannin with a long finish. Outstanding spot for enjoyment; Blind would have pegged as Volnay. 2010 Col D’Orcia Brunello Di Montalcino Il Veltro - clean, clear, light + moving to pale rim. Nose is quiet; herbal, light cherry with oak tinged sap base. Lightly spiced and floral. Ultra dry; cherry, raspberry with dark, drying tannin. Acidity remains high and finish is long. After 11 years, one might expect some yielding but this is still wound tight. #brunello #brunellodimontalcino #coldorcia #ilveltro #docg
Good morning and happy #winewednesday - sharing the 2018 Domaine Gerard Tremblay Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir. @domaine_gerardtremblay_chablis 2018 is considered to be a vintage for early enjoyment, the sun shone and provided warm with dry conditions. Yields were high and the lack of cooling weather will diminish the acidity levels that is a signature of Chablis. From 30 year old vines, this Grand Cru Vaudésir has the flinty / smoked aromatics where tropical notes of pineapple emerge. On the palate, elegant used oak compliments notes of pear, honey with acacia flower. While most GC Chablis have reached pricing of top tier 1er Burgundies, this one aligns with Burg Village prices. The top of the pops is the Equinox Mule as it has the perfect level of sweetness, acidity and gingered spiciness from the @annexales ginger beer followed closely by the Cherry Gin Collins with cherry and lemon and the Spruce Berry Smash with raspberry and spruce.
