The Landslide — What was your character’s first love like?
I HEARD IT ON THE GRAPEVINE ASK MEMES.The Landslide — What was your character’s first love like?
The memory of her first love is hazy now, such is the nature of recall, but she remembers this clearer than day: the overripe feeling of California summer hanging over the day, bruised knees, scraped elbows, cornflower blue eyes, and spun gold hair. Popsicles melting and puddling on the sidewalk, weeping from the LA heat.
When I grow up, I’m gonna move to California, she declares, chewing on the wood of her popsicle stick for the remnants of lingering sugar.
Rosalie opens her mouth to take in a sharp inhale, nodding along excitedly, heart beating in the column of her throat. You have to, she says. Pinky promise you will.
When they tangle their pinkies together, it’s sticky with the syrup leftover from their popsicles and it’s kind of uncomfortable, but the rest of the day she spends like she’s floating on clouds. She tries her best not to cry when she leaves, Indiana homeward bound.
The blue of her eyes and the sunshine of her hair stay the same, but that’s about all that does.
… Great show, Rosie.
She swallows down her heart from where it beats in the column of her throat and primes the razor edge of her tongue and smile to hide the wounded, limping half of her.
