Mother hugging her cub at the Sabi Sand Game Reserve (South Africa)
God only knows how much I love this character (Cassandra Cain). Possibly more than my own life, and maybe it's not so healthy or logical to appreciate a fictional character so much, but for me it's just…. Too much. It's not just what he means to me, it's everything the character is. The character, for better or for worse, has made me meet so many people, even thanks to something as insignificant as this I was able to connect TOO MUCH with a person who became - the one I loved the most, ever, and the one who ended up hurting me the most. So sometimes, when I see the character - when I see certain ships, it hurts me, it hurts me because it frames a certain stage of my life, a certain stage where I was with a person whose bond with Cassandra is… Distantly similar to this.
But I don't want to wallow in that grief.
Cassandra Cain is such a charming and loving character that I can't talk about her without crying, because I love her so much, because of how she identifies with who she is and what she represents. How much it hurts her to forgive herself, how difficult it is for her to trust herself, and all the weariness she has carried throughout her life, tormenting herself, depersonalising herself to caricature her identity in order to become a symbol that transforms her pain.
I don't know. I get too intense.
Thank you so much, Cassandra Cain, for existing. Even though you're just a fictional character.
You are everything. You're that hope that I need... You represent that love for a world about which you are alien, that inconceivable maelstrom to love, to struggle - having wallowed in self-destruction for penance, to find that family.
