“It’s not a big deal. What do I look like, a teenager? It happens.” He flashed his hands up, slapping them down quickly on his thighs in exasperation. One could speculate it was his crude way of trying to spare a shred of her dignity. “It’s just sex things.”

Look at him and then look at me.” Kia waved her hand in front of her face, unpainted, unadorned--a tiredness reclining under her eyes--to give her point emphasis. “He may be despicable, but he’s still way out of my league. As much as you may hate him, his claim of being ‘crafted by the heavens, carved by the gods’ are still true.”

This is what her self-worth had shriveled into. Shockingly, it wasn’t even Shahin’s fault. This is how all the moments she felt rejected, unwanted, and unimpressive had left her. Suddenly, she felt so small, like a performer who forgot her lines while so many judging eyes watched. Kia’s form seemed to shrink. “I can’t do better. I am not better.”

5. What sort of religion was practiced in their home? Did religion play a role in their upbringing? (For both Kia & Shahin)

“The dragons of my realm came from the Earth, and that is who we worship. She is the core of the world, and we trod upon her many coils that make the earth we stand upon. She breathed the magic into the mere reptiles that would later become dragons, and we must be thankful by taking care of her. As queen, it is important I set an example to my people by reciting the importance of mindful use of our magic.”

“My mother was a healer, and healers are required to be exceptionally attuned to their spirituality-- just as well as anatomy. She was quite rigid about providing timely offerings and maintaining the shrines so they were not neglected. Now, I do not rely on prayer when times are dire, for we are just one blink of many lights created by the goddess, but I find it important to give offerings to the spirits and those who departed. They return to the earth goddess and will some day come back to us in another form, even if it in as the wind or the river, or the rocks that are worn down by the river.”
