Hard questions: Did you love Rin?
He had valued her company, her skills, her gentle reprimands when he exhausted himself. Her healing hands when he burned himself from within.
But—— love…?
Kakashi didn’t know what that was, not back then. Not with so few examples of it. Minato with Kushina, that was what love looked like, or so he was told. The sparkle in his eyes when talking about her, the laughter in her lips when teasing him. The red in their faces when caught spying the other.
No.
No, he hadn’t been in love with Rin. But he had loved her. In the small, stunted part of his heart that was forced awake with Obito’s death — that was the moment he realized just how precious life was.
How precious were his nakama. How irresponsible and mean he had been, all this time, taking their time for granted. Taking their concern and laughs and smiles as something other, apart from him. He had been so cold — so weak.
Unable to see how very special it was, to have friends, to have someone like sensei at his side. He had been childish, Kakashi knew, so hardheaded and alone….
— Thinking himself a lone wolf.
