at the moment, all those long and drawn-out waiting periods are the best thing that ever happened to him. they usually sit in the broadcasting station’s waiting room for hours after finishing pre-recording their stages and pretty much only wait for the encore to happen which is kind of annoying and exhausting -- there really is not much to do. maybe there’s time for a nap but most of the time it’s really just that; waiting.

but with the release of a new game in one of his favorite series ever, baekhyun feels like the waiting period is too short actually.

how long they’re been in the waiting room today is a blur for him, has no idea what most of the other members are doing. jaehyun might be playing animal crossing himself somewhere in here and he thinks that kangjoon is sleeping on the couch in the other side of the room, but baekhyun can’t quite get himself to look up when he’s on a mission: finding a stringfish. he has no idea what’s the best time to catch them because he doesn’t want to cheat but he also had no luck in finishing one of them. even used up thirteen packages of bait already in the process.

it’s frustrating, really, but baekhyun’s also stubborn and wants that god-forsaken fish in his museum, so he’s not going to give up! ever! or he thinks so, at least. because when the stylist noona calls for him, he has no other choice than to pull his gaze away from his switch. he frowns, almost grumpy about having to interrupt his game, and that’s when he notices jihoon next to him on the couch. he didn’t see him before. “hey,” he says and pushes the console into the younger’s hands, “can you fish for me? i’ll be right back,” leaving without another word to get his touch up.

it’s not his first time on stage. quite the opposite actually because baekhyun’s been on stage so many times before that he’s long lost count of it. there were so many opportunities for him as trainee that pulled him up there, from the new year’s concert to that one christmas performance at the seoul plaza -- five minutes from home, actually -- where he got to be part of a special stage and all those evaluations! there often wasn’t an actual audience around for those performances but it still counts. those were stages as well. even when he moderated the royal survival finale with kangjoon it was some kind of preparation for this moment. all those times before he was a trainee -- every episode he got to perform on the mgas, every competition he joined as a kid.

but this is it.

debut, the real deal. mere moments before it’s made official baekhyun feels more nervous than ever. he thinks he’s never been this nervous before, feels as if all those times on the stage performing hasn’t prepared him for this moment. that all those hours practicing were for nothing, those debut preparations were useless because he’s not ready to get out of there.

it got baekhyun in a daze. he can hear the fans cheering outside, waiting for them and screeching their soul out and it feels surreal that they’re all here, there for them. supporting them. it’s insane and amazing at the same time to think about that when they only have two releases out, when their album came out just, like, an hour ago, but they’re all here. so many of them. despite not knowing anything about them besides what they’ve seen in teasers and on dream knights and baekhyun’s had fans before, but these are their fans. de:code’s fans, and that’s just.. different. it’s different than someone rooting for him on a television survival show or someone writing a nice comment about him on naver because they saw him as background piece at a performance. real deal, yeah? his fingers are trembling as he gathers the other members together to put their hands in the middle, for a cheer that’s easily drowned out by the noise of the crowd.

and they’re trembling while he gets on that stage and they go even more wild. stage lights blinding and head spinning a little. the group gives a joint greeting and it’s his first official greeting as an official member of de:code. as a debuted idol. 

with a smile, he introduces himself first with a bow. ( that’s what a leader does. ) “hello,” he says and his voice is firm, strong and as bright as his smile, “i’m de:code’s leader and main vocal, b.mil. that’s no secret though, i guess,” he adds, laughing into the microphone at his terrible pun. the crowd only cheers even more. they’re loud and baekhyun can feel it reach to his bones. 

he sees them waving their signs with names of the members written on them. his name, as well.

and it starts to feel good.

“i will never forget this moment and that all of you shared it with us,” he says and his voice wavers a little, emotions rising as he realizes it once again. this is it. but the corners of his lips curl upwards into an even brighter smile.

he’s made it and he loves it. he will love every second of it.
