shots rang like funeral bells.
every bullet found its mark — belle and wise fired with calm efficiency as their muted expressions never changed through the flood of enemies, ethereals and hollow raiders alike that launched themselves at them. every opening they created was one pyrois seized immediately and turned their coordinated fire into a relentless assault. a creature had tried to plunge from the roof of a collapsed building that resembled that of cheesetopia from the outer ring with its crystalline teeth sharp and ready to swallow an entire person.
the youngest didn’t even look at it.
“ pyrois. ”
the name alone was enough to have the etheric other vanish in an instant from the siblings’ side before he respawed right in front of the monster’s line of sight. it had happened so fast that any witnesses willing to stare at the onslaught would have trouble trying to piece together what had happened to the unfortunate creature. its body had not split neatly beneath a blade as there came no grace from the multitude of strikes inflicted on its frame. the impact assimilated the victim into a grotesque eruption of fractured ether matter, limbs flying left and right with no remorse.
it wasn’t combat — it was extermination.
all three carved through the horde of enemies without a pause in their steps. shots fired with terrifyingly accurate aims from the siblings whose faces and bodies were gradually getting more and more stained by the splash of blood spilling from human obstacles whilst remnants of ether sprinkled their clothing before evaporating into drifting ash. their eye implants glowed an eerie gold like the outline of an eclipse as pathways glitched and simulated in front of them towards the suspected area that fairy continued to feed into their otics from beyond.
handfuls of enemies layered across streets that mirrored their home of sixth street, but bittersweet memories alone did not falter their advancement. shrieks vomited from every angle served as an unbearable chorus of distorted voices that hindered the communications between reality and illusion, however silence wouldn’t be far the moment commands were uttered between dry lips of the wielders of the ever burning flame.
fragments of skeletal bits flew — the upper half of a hollow raider hurled through the air before slamming into a surrounding wall and cracking the structure with it. jaws disappeared beneath impacts of steel, ether remains sprayed across meters of ground, and dismembered parts that were no longer distinguishable blanketed every metric they stalked like hunted trophies. even papago itself tried to fight back ; it morphed where common sense of structural engineering was no more as buildings bent in strange ways while the sky above blended into colors that didn’t have names. impossible geometry tried to slow down the prowl, but it proved futile for it only seemed to piss them off even more, redirecting their eyes to fit a better route.
nothing was going to stop them.
as they neared their destination, something deep within the hollow growled. the air thickened to the point of near suffocation, putting a slight halt in their step as they configured their bodies to adapt. they couldn’t see it — not yet — but they knew it was coming after them. fairy warned them of the hound approaching, pinpointed a few escape routes, but the words fell on deaf ears as belle and wise anchored themselves in wait, anticipating for its arrival. they weren’t running away ; they were going to kill that motherfucker for taking the one thing in the world that held the innate ability to turn two compassionate people into blood thirsty monsters.
ten seconds.
it had taken ten seconds for the towering ethereal to emerge from the depths with its repulsive silhouette lingering just a few feet behind them. between its disgusting maw, eous laid helplessly as tendrils of corruption writhed from around the creature, growing more tense the closer it got. pyrois was the first to react as they turned their full attention towards the hound, stoic and ready for orders. it didn’t take long before the siblings joined suit — belle tilted her head backwards with an expression to her face she hadn’t worn ever since pursuing the son of a bitch : a freakish smile. wise slightly turned his head to allow himself to look over his shoulder with a deadpan face that coated itself in nothing but frightful darkness.
heartbreak wrapped itself in something far more dangerous the second their eyes locked on the unconscious bangboo dangling from the creature’s mouth.
only a breath could be exchanged before the hound leaped. its claws tore into the pavement as the rest burst beneath its feet, vanishing into a blur of black and haunting green smoke. the proxies reacted instantaneously without either understanding when the ethereal moved, their weapons taking aim and firing two shots so closely timed that it sounded like one deafening crack. both shots found their mark — one striking the side of the hound’s skull while the other punctured the bony plating around its shoulder. it wasn’t enough to deal real damage, but killing it hadn’t been the point.
not now, at least.
its head snapped sideways, one enormous claw missing belle by inches but violently stopped in its momentum by pyrois who slammed himself between his masters and the ethereal, the impact powerful enough to send an immense pressure to ripple through the area like a tsunami of gust. the ground beneath gave into their combined weight and strength, chunks of asphalt breaking loose as neither entity gave way despite the destruction exploding around them.
it had all happened in a matter of two seconds.
belle and wise recovered from the intensity of the demolition out of sheer luck, but it granted them no excuse to settle on their offense. they were already moving again the second they had a window of opportunity, stepping from behind pyrois with their weapons trained upon the hound's temple. no hesitation, no pause, no moment of recollection to remind them of the kindness that nestled in their hearts — eous laying silent in between the creature’s jaw was the drive they needed.
red was all their golden irises could see.
“ eat shit and die. ”
