Entering the kitchen, Cole caught sight of two things. One, Sumo was lying on the floor currently being brushed. Two, the person brushing Sumo was not one of Cole's brothers or his dad, instead it was a woman he didn't recognize. Sumo didn't seem bothered though, so the woman was okay right? That and just out the glass door leading to the back yard he could see Conrad and Cameron looking at the collapsed doghouse. They knew the woman was there too, surely, so she was safe to approach, right?
Rowan hadn’t been at the house very long— she’d come in the nick of time, it seemed, as the doghouse had collapsed not long after she’d gotten there. She was the one who’d insisted on brushing Sumo, as she had dogs of her own and knew how out of control the hair could get.
Despite her normal way of dressing, sitting on the floor didn’t bother her— she was on the floor a lot with her own pets, and her great-grandchildren, and along with that she’d made the dress herself out of material that didn’t attract anything like fuzz or animal hair, so she wouldn’t get Sumo’s fur all over her.
She knew Cole was approaching before she heard him, and she turned her head slightly so she could see him out of the corner of her eye, a smile crossing her lips— she didn’t want to scare him.
“You can come closer. You don’t have to be afraid.”
