“What about that one? What’s that star called?”

@nitwng sent: “Please don’t laugh.”
“’Course not! It’s pretty!” There’s a confident manner to her assurances, the half alien reaching into her lap for a clip before securing what was probably now the tenth barrette to her dad’s hair. The scattered array of clips and bands was admittedly a little odd looking, but perfect in Mar’i’s eyes nonetheless. Bright green hues squinted thoughtfully at her work thus far and a quick exhale of breath blew an errant strand of her own hair out of her face and freed her line of vision. The young girl swayed slightly mid-air from where her leg-crossed form hovered over the ground before she was giving a nod of approval. “Mama taught me how to braid too.”

“Your daddy is a smart man, Mar’i,” Tim replied and smiled fondly at the girl. Of course people could break a pinkie promise, but he wasn’t going to tell her that yet. For now, it was a good thing that she believed in it and he hoped she could keep her innocence as long as possible. Unfortunately, that might come sooner than anyone wished due to the entire family’s line of work.
Happy that she took his hand, his smile widened slightly and he gently squeezed her hand back. “They probably are.” There were almost always someone awake. They all had their own weird sleeping schedules. due to their, mostly, dual lives.
“He thinks so too.” Mar’i acknowledged innocently, nodding her head in agreement nonetheless with a light hum. Her dad was usually right. Usually. Which was why she figured that this might not be the case when he’d said not to follow her aunts and uncles out on patrols...not listening to that had gotten her here. So it didn’t come as a surprise when she’d freaked out the moment she thought her uncle Tim was injured.
But no one broke pinkie promises, so there was no need to really worry.
She pleasantly returned the grin, idly kicking at a rock on the sidewalk. “You’re right, I don’ think they sleep at night.” Mar’i had a set bedtime, but out of the rest of the family she’d rarely seen them go to bed at a reasonable hour. But that was to be expected considering all of their night jobs. “Kinda like real bats.”
“Anything for you.”
Eyebrows arch up toward her hairline in surprise as if he were offering her some priceless jewel and not a stuffed star with a bizarrely stitched on smiley face that had caught her eye in the middle of a store. Her arms swiftly wrapped around the plushie to hold it tightly against herself and Mar’i gave a broad toothy smile in return. Some babysitters definitely got extra points in her book. “Are you sure?”

It appeared like the blonde was dozing, or else maybe trying to at least. Mar’i smiled at her aunt, and teetering over before poking her gently on the nose. Probably the most cutesy greeting she knew how to employ and thus far, affective.

Was he awake? Asleep? Distracted? Completely aware of the half-alien sneaking up behind him? Who knew! All Mar’i knew for certain that within seconds her pointer finger was pressing her uncle’s nose like a button before dropping once again to her side with a smile.

- boops nose - :D
Nose boops weren’t foreign to Mar’i in the slightest, so it was only logical they should lose the ability to excite her after long enough, right?
Wrong.
A grin stretched from ear to ear across her face and with a giggle her nose scrunched up in turn. She’d wandered off not too long ago, no doubt leaving her parents behind as she stumbled around to explore. Raising her arms over her head in full expectation of a hug Mar’i curled and uncurled her fingers, perhaps she’d return the booping.
“Aunt Terra!”
