“You know,” Fenimore sighed. “I didn’t think I would ever learn to understand you.”
She turned on her side and squinted to find Shirley’s figure in the dark room. The other Ferines girl has already turned on her side and seemed to be trying to take up as little room as possible even in her sleep. Fenimore couldn’t help but smile at that.
“I mean a Ferines in love with an Orerines? An Orerines you referred to as family… it was unthinkable and yet they all still expect you to save us.”
Walter, Maurits, and everyone in the village gave Shirley such a wide berth even now. It was as if they thought the god would come and dwell in her any second. What they didn’t understand was that Shirley could barely save herself from the despairs and trials of a fifteen year old girl.
And yet…. she had a heart that loved both the sea and land. She had told Fenimore that she would come back for her and she had. Even now when she was barely holding it together, Shirley still stayed in the village.
“Shirley,” Fenimore whispered and slid across the bed to check on said friend. Shirley was still curled in on herself and Fenimore turned her over to check her face for any signs of a panic attack. Her brow was furrowed but breath came easily to her and Fenimore let out another sigh of her own.
“Shirley. I think you can do it. Remember what I told you before? You’re unbeatable.”
Having said that, she turned on her own side so that they were back to back. Shirley’s breathing had evened out again and Fenimore followed that rhythm. It was like sleeping next to her twin with Shirley but a little bit different. A little bit more exciting. She looked forward to the days they would have together.
Shirley smiled in her sleep.
You’re cute. No one can beat you. You’re going to be fine.
