He should have expected it, really - he’d been growing closer to the pirate steadily, and there had always been something between them from the start that he’d never quite understood - but still, when it came, the kiss was a surprise. It took him a moment to respond, but when he did he all but melted against the other man, enjoying the soft, gentleness he would never have expected. A kiss from a pirate, he mused, ought to have been hard and hot.

But he didn’t have long to simply enjoy it. It wasn’t quite instantaneous, but it was close enough - a strange sensation washed over him, almost like a shiver down his spine, and as he pulled back from the kiss and blinked at the man before him, a sudden clarity came to his mind that hadn’t been there before. No longer was he staring at Captain Hook, the handsome pirate he had found himself drawn to for unknown reasons - instead he was looking upon the face of his beloved Leftenant Killian Jones, seeing him for the first time. How could he possibly have forgotten? 

It didn’t matter then that the last time he had knowingly seen this face, Killian had broken his heart with a rejection he hadn’t fully believed, or that he knew he hadn’t forgotten him by chance and there was clearly a connection between the two events - all that mattered was the simple fact that they were together again.

“I love you,” he breathed out, the only words he could think to utter in that moment. He didn’t even give Killian a chance to react, let alone to respond - his hands lifted, fisting in the lapels of Killian’s coat, and he dragged him in for a much deeper kiss.

Keeping Secrets

"Bored?" David grinned, watching his partner dress whilst shamelessly admiring the view it provided him. "I could never be bored with you, love." He slipped out of the bed himself, pulling on a pair of pj trousers and his dressing gown. He leaned into the kiss, allowing himself to linger a little longer than he probably should have done. Given that the shower was still running, he figured they had time.

"One day, I won't have to. I promise." He took Killian's hand, lacing their fingers together securely. "You're the best for understanding, you know that right? I just… I need to find the right time, and I like this just being ours, y'know?" He stole another kiss, aware that he was tempting fate by delaying Killian's escape further. "Now c'mon, knowing my luck he'll decide to cut his shower short for the first time in his life."

He crossed to the door, opening it as quietly as possible, thankful that the hinges didn't creak or groan. He led the way to the stairs, grinning back at Killian as he deliberately stepped over the one creaky floorboard at the top of the stairs.

When an hour had lapsed since the time Killian was supposed to be back, David had begun to worry. He’d forced back the rising panic, knowing that sometimes delays happened for perfectly innocent reasons and he was sure Killian would enlighten him once he walked through the door, but it was difficult to keep a steady head when the minutes kept ticking by and there was no sight nor sound of him.

He heard the footsteps first, tensing at the sound whilst he broke it down in a matter of seconds to deduce whether or not they belonged to his partner, or to a stranger. A smile of relief flitted across his face as he recognised the gait, and he set down the book he had been trying (and failing) to read, rising to his feet. With a gun tucked out of sight and a knife in his hand, he approached the door - it paid to be cautious in this world.

He readied himself to greet Killian with a scolding tone for being late, but the moment he opened up the door to their makeshift home, all thought of reprimand was stunned out of him. “Shit.” The knife was slotted into its sheath to free up his hands as he helped Killian over the threshold, kicking the door closed behind them as he supported his partner’s weight. “What happened? Were you ambushed?” The blood was on his clothes, his hands, even his face, but David couldn’t tell it if it was his own, or someone else’s. “Talk to me, Jones.”

Rediscovering You

Dave. It was an almost agonising relief to hear that nickname, spoken with such evident fondness, for the first time in what, to him, seemed like a lifetime. No one else had ever dared to shorten his name in such a way. No one else had ever even thought to. Only his sailor had bestowed that name upon him.

"Hush…" He shook his head, lifting a hand to brush the dampness from his beloved's cheeks. Now that he remembered, he understood what pain Killian must have felt each and every time they were together, how it must have tortured the pirate that he couldn't recall him, couldn't remember any of their history. "I never believed it."

He had to make Killian hear that. The poor man must have been beating himself up over the way they left things for so long. "I refused to. I knew what we had, Killian, and I knew your words were false. I did not understand why, but I knew you would never have spoken such lies without good cause." He kissed him again, soft and sweet. If only he had kissed me sooner…

"I suspect my father is behind this, but that does not matter now. The only thing that matters is that I am here, with you, where I belong. No wonder I was always so drawn to you, Captain Hook." He smiled, his hand reaching for the hook, fingers curling around cool metal. "I imagine this has quite the story…"

Not Quite Goodbye

There was a charge to the air that was far different to the norm between them, a static tension that only punctuated the finality of this night for them. It was on both their minds to make this something to remember, to treasure in the long, empty nights to follow, and for that reason alone it would be all the more special. They were parting with a piece of each other bound firmly in their hearts.

David's hands carefully explored every inch of the lean figure he had come to know so explicitly, tracing lines and curves he had mapped out a thousand times before, committing it all to memory yet again. He would not forget this carefully toned body, nor would he forget the unique taste of him, that lingering hint of rum that seemed ever present on his tongue even after days of going dry.

He would miss it all, but he would miss kisses like this one the most. His hands crept their way up to frame that handsome face, then slid higher to grab gentle handfuls of thick dark hair, leaning into Killian as he sank deeper into the kiss. When enough time had passed, he could indulge in those strong arms from time to time, but there would be no more kisses after tonight. That, he believed then, was the biggest tragedy of them all.

No More Hiding

He had known it would surprise Killian – although not necessarily public in the sense that they were the only two outside, it was still far more than he would normally have allowed. After all, anyone could walk out here at any moment, and catch them. That was the point. He smiled as they parted, seeing the shine in Killian's eyes that could only come from joy. Yes, he mused to himself, he was doing the right thing.

"Happy New Year, Kil'." He sank easily into the second kiss, eager for more, as always. Kissing Killian had been the only thing he allowed himself to indulge in before, at least as a more romantic gesture. Cuddles, of course, could be just platonic, but kisses? That was definitely something a little more. Even then, he had restricted himself, knowing that if he got too comfortable with it, he might be tempted to take things further, and he had sworn himself to waiting.

Pulling back again, he rested his forehead to Killian's with a smile, his hand seeking the other boy's. "It's time, Kil'." He told him, knowing Killian would know exactly what he was talking about. "No more hiding, no more being careful. I want people to know that I love you, that we're two young idiots in love."

Goodbye - Our muses have one last night before breaking up/leaving each other (CaptainCharming)

It was for the best.

They’d both agreed - they wanted different things, at that moment, for their futures. David needed to go and study further, focus on getting the higher level degree so he could, eventually, get his dream job. Killian had his own plans for his career, and the two, right then, simply didn’t mesh well. They’d hardly see anything of each other between their individual work and study loads, and it would, ultimately, put a strain on their relationship. Better to part now as friends than to end up hating each other.

It wouldn’t be easy. They still loved each other. It was going to be a difficult few months as they adjusted to life where they were back to what they’d been at the start: Liam’s younger brother, and Liam’s best friend. But that was something they had to face tomorrow - for now, for tonight, they still had each other, and they were going to make the most of their remaining time.

Drawing Killian close against him, David captured his lips in a slow, lingering kiss, his hands smoothing down Killian’s t-shirt before his fingers hooked underneath it, seeking skin, pushing the fabric up far enough so he could splay both hands against Killian’s bare back.

SEND ME “✏️ + a ship“ or “headcanon + a ship” for three ( or more ) random headcanons I have for that ship!

David loves every part of Killian - who he is, who he was, and everything in between. Killian occasionally struggles to understand this given some of the things he’s done, but as David always points out: no one is perfect, and people make mistakes, or do things they later regret. Every decision Killian made in his past made him the man he loves today.

They alternate where they live: one week they’ll live in a shared house in Storybrooke, the next they’ll live on the Jolly. This is by David’s insistence, as he knows how much the ship means to Killian (one of his only physical tethers to his lost brother, for one thing) and he knows his partner finds comfort in the rocking of the waves.

Killian gifts a dog to David after they’ve been together a while (and after hearing tales of his dog from the farm). David calls him Wilby the Second.
