Nessa breathed in the fresh air gratefully. Although they kept the shelter clean, there was still something of a hospital smell to it. She was always glad to get out, even if she did like working there. Lunch times she always made sure to take Lucky out to the enclosed field that they used for the shelter animals to run around in.
Today, she had brought with her a crotchety old pug whose owner had just died. He was not doing well in the shelter environment, so Nessa and the other staff tried taking him out as much as they could. They would start looking for a foster parent for him soon, probably.
She threw the ball she had, and Lucky took off like a shot. Percy, the pug just looked at her like she was insane.
“Oh go and sniff something then,” she said, waving him away.
She looked up and saw a familiar face on the vet clinic side of the fence.
“Break time for you too?”
