Jimmy is lucky Nikita’s excitement wasn’t strong enough to pull him out of bed before he woke up; granted, he was already an early riser, but at least he wasn’t waking up before nine in the morning.
Still wearing a pair of sweatpants and a thin grey t-shirt, Jimmy seated himself by the tree and wiggled himself closer until he had presents in his lap. He opens Mitten’s first and laughs at the cute, tiny sweater he finds. He puts it on Mittens before she can protest what’s happening, but their kitten doesn’t seem to mind too terribly. His presents are next and he can’t help but smile through it all.
He laughs at the tickets and doesn’t stop himself from getting up to hug Nikita tightly for the promise of a camping trip. He hasn’t gone camping since he was in middle school, but he’s still excited. “Thank you. Now–.”
He pulls away and reaches around their tree to pull out Nikita’s gift. In her box, there’s the same blanket she had bought, except in a dark red color, funnily enough, and a card. In the card he’s written his thankfulness for having her in his life and how much he does care and love her. He doesn’t leave out just how much he appreciates her in his life and that she could very well been the thing that’s saved him. Wrapping his arm around her shoulders, Jimmy kisses her cheek and mumbles, “I love you.”
Nikita is enthusiastic as he opens the presents, oohing and aahing at the appropriate moments. As soon as Mittens is secured in her sweater, Nikita scoops her up for the pair of them to enjoy the show.
She’s taken aback by how tightly he hugs her at the end, but that doesn’t stop her from reciprocating. Mittens meows in disgruntlement at being sandwiched for the thousandth time between her parents. Nikita giggles and sets aside the kitten to scoop up the present Jimmy offers her. She puts on a show of shaking it before settling down to pull it open.
Nikita laughs at the sight of the thick, warm blanket. It’s the same one she bought him, albeit a different color. Then her fingers pick up the card, tracing over the dark handwriting sprawled over the white surface.
The longer she reads, the more her eyes fill with tears. By the time she’s done, they’re trickling down her face and beading around the corners of her smile. It’s the first time he’s told her he loves her. It terrifies her, knowing his mortality and the limited time together. There are a million other factors in her anxiety, but she shoves them aside for today in wake of this revelation. Jimmy Novak loves her. Her, out of all the women in the world. “I love you.” The words are half laughed, half sobbed as she puts her arms around his neck, pulling herself into his lap to kiss him.
