As a fellow Mother Ethel fan, I'd like to know more about how you picked each song for the crying during sex moodboard especially 78fahrenheit for Emi!
welllllll first of all i picked it because it’s literally one of my favorites from her unreleased songs lol. my top three are: 1. crying during sex, 2. tongue, 3. 78fahrenheit
but the overall mood of the song fits emi perfectly, and the lyrics feel like something emi would say to satoru, or at least think about him.
i haven’t explored their relationship as much as i’d like yet i plan to in the following chapters, but it’s complicated. emi is a very fragile girl. she acts tough, but that’s clearly a form of self-protection. i’ve written about her twisted feelings for satoru in previous chapters, but she sees him as more than just a friend.
part of her wishes she was “pure”, she puts satoru on a pedestal without realizing it and she blames herself for not reaching him. in some fantasy world, she wishes she could be with him, but she’s very rooted in reality, she knows it will never happen, so she doesn’t let herself actually feel those feelings. instead, she bottles them up and only thinks about them when she’s alone.
specifically the lyrics to this song feel very emi. for example:
“only winners get a winning streak / and you’re a motherfucking winner baby / you cry about it every time you feel empty”
this is something emi would tell satoru…
also emi really sees satoru for who he is, and satoru sees emi for who she is. that’s part of the reason there was never anything romantic between them in the story. they’re the only ones who truly see each other, and i don’t want to spoil too much, but that recognition is important to both their arcs ^^
“you walk so close to the road / i never stop you, call it sheer curiosity”
another like that’s always felt like a very emi line to me. she watches satoru self-destruct and doesn’t stop him because she understands that impulse as she’s doing the same exact thing.
as for the other song i picked—please listen to it if you haven’t. it’s heartbreaking but it’s such a good song, and i really don’t have to explain why it perfectly portrays the sexual abuse emi endured as a child.
