She peeked out, slowly. No sign of him to the left, nor to the right. Taking a deep breath, Clara ventured out to the courtyard, where she sat down at her favorite koi pond. Watching the fish always calmed her down.

"What in the heavens is going on?" Maria was given five minutes to speak to the chef before negotiations began. Two ninjas stood nearby, listening closely. "They said that you owe them a debt and that's why they kidnapped you."
"Milady," the poor chef was chained up, tears streaming down his face. "I owe them 10,000 bowls of ramen!"
Maria gasped. She was prepared to settle a monetary debt, not a culinary one!
"I was drunk when I agreed to it," the chef blubbered on. "I didn't think they'd actually come after me! I apologize! I'll be too busy making noodles to prepare His Highness' soup! I'm a failure! I'm nothing!"
"Just calm down!" Maria said, ironically. "I have come too far to give up now. I'll get you out of here, okay? Stop crying, you're a big boy, aren't you?!"
He managed to smile, snot dripping from his nose. "Thank you, Lady Maria, thank you!"
The problem was that Maria had no idea what she could offer for the chef's quick release. Not yet, anyway...
"You really shouldn't eat that, darling. It's not befitting of someone of your station."
"I know but...they smelled so good! And I was so hungry after fighting off those bandits." Clara was enjoying a bowl of fried noodles with extra sauce.
"Well, don't let anyone see you. And don't spill it on your clothes! Oboro will have a stroke."
"I once read about a woman who became a woman on the grave of her worst enemy."
"...It was just so inspiring. There was a woman who used to give me so much trouble at court. She kept trying to show me up. It wasn't possible, of course but the fact that she was attempting it was just an affront to my entire being. She died choking on a ladyfinger two years ago. If only I could turn back time."
"I'll show you to my favorite hot spring. But you see..."
"It's a secret. If you come with me, you have to promise not to tell anyone where it is. On pain of death!"

He offered the tea, and she shook her head. She was already so warm. Meanwhile, she squinted at his hair color. It was even brighter than her mother's. Did he come from her kingdom? No, that was impossible. It was too tiring to think about.
She did perk up, however, at the mention of her beloved mount.
"His name," she said. "Is Flappin' Jack Flash. He's a pegasus..." Then, she looked forlornly toward the tent entrance. "I miss him. I hope...someone is taking him out every day."

"...Zelda can I speak to you for a moment."
Miles lowered his voice to barely a whisper. His niece was visiting him, and she wanted to see the castle town. Naturally, she required a bodyguard, and Zelda said she knew the perfect person for the job. He wasn't sure what to expect, but it certainly wasn't some whippersnapper from the country who didn't even own a set of armor!
"Is this really the best option? Do you realize what kind of hell my sister and her husband will rain down if she goes home with so much as a scratch on her? Do you want to deal with that?"
Clara, meanwhile, examined the young man. He looked a little scruffy, but he certainly didn't look weak, especially with the fierce look in his eyes. And she was only going out to town. It wasn't as if she was going off to battle! Anxious to leave, she shuffled her feet.

Most people were honored to have an audience with the Queen of Nohr. Clara was no exception; she was certainly not what Clara expected, with her small stature, but she seemed to be a kind and elegant person. But she couldn't fight a sinking feeling as she made her way to the throne room.
Certainly she hadn't found out about that, Clara thought. She couldn't have. They swore not to tell on pain of death. But when she saw Siegbert standing at the door, a chill ran up her spine.
"You told her didn't you." Not even a hello.
"I had every intention of keeping it a secret!"
"Oh, gods! Siegbert! Do you know how screwed we are?! Do you?! She's going to tell your dad, you know that right?! We are SCREWED."
"Calm yourself! Please! Someone will hear you!"
