"I have to say, I'm very impressed!" Thera's accent was enhanced by a bit of extra plum, brought on by her tongue being firmly planted in her cheek, "I thought you were going to strangle him for a minute there."

And for a change she didn't mean Donovan. Granted 'Gooder' had a habit of giving Tyler shit that everybody seemed fine with until Ham gave some back - but this time it had been poor trying-too-hard Willie who had gotten under the skin.

"I mean ... call me crazy ..." Thera climbed the last few steps of the retractable stairs, "but I think Willie's for real. The kinda guy who gets shoved into lockers, but for real." She paused long enough to pull the stairs up behind her, then hefted the bag she'd brought along.

"Snacks and booze. I'm guessing we're gonna be up here for a while?"

"More or less." Thera had her head down, or more exactly her gaze, focused on the truck engine open in front of her. A thing she really was working on, but also in that moment an air of innocence and hiding her definite 'not'-smile.

Several yards away, Mike Donovan was shepherding their new guests toward the accommodation - two tired-looking Visitor Fifth Columnists who had decided things were getting a little too hot on the Mothership and defected down to Earth. Gooder wasn't as naive as he (reportedly) used to be, but he did believe in giving everyone room to make their case. Or prove themselves false, with hopefully not too much damage done. He also hadn't said anything to Thera's remark a moment before, but his look had spoken volumes.

"Not my fault Lizards don't have a sense of humour." She picked up a wrench and leaned into the engine well. "All I said was, 'goodnight, sleep tight ... give the bedbugs a bite ...'"

What would your dream pet be, if laws of physics and reality were no obstacle? ------------

Thera raised an eyebrow, smirking at Chris as he read from the quiz pages of a battered magazine with all the due over-seriousness of two very bored people waiting in a Resistance bunker could amuse themselves with.

"Reality no obstacle," She repeated, feet kicked up on the salvaged coffee table and head tilted on the back of her chair. Paused a beat. "I want an ancient red dragon that only eats Lizards."

"Good choice!" Chris pointed a finger, clearly with tongue in cheek so as not to laugh. He settled back again, ruffling the magazine as he moved to the next question. "For a second there I thought you were gonna say Tyler."

If he wanted to continue keeping watch, the window was right there. It was probably a wise choice in any case - if the lizards saw him get hit they’d be on the prowl like sharks smelling blood - but in the shorter term the more important factor was keeping Ham sitting still.

At least they were working in tandem when it came to the shoulder holster, Thera’s face screwing up in a mix of repulsion and fortitude as the odour of burned flesh became more apparent.

“Can’t tell just yet ...” Her expression didn’t much change, except to settle in a  frown as she schooled herself to ignore the smell. “Look, your shirt if fucked anyway ... let’s go the same way as with the holster, then I’ll cut it from around the wound.” And hope ... maybe even pray. Thera was absolutely not a medic except for first aid, and she was truly hanging her hopes that this was just an impact wound and a burn rather than having some sort of funky extra alien effect to go with it.

Scissors would’ve been better, but she made do with a knife, slicing the shirt until it could be drawn away except for the patch immediately around the wound. “Keep that clean, it’ll do for bandages.” All business now, any squeamishness firmly locked away. “Ugh ... OK, there’s a hole in you and burns around it.” A small shake of her head, “Not much I can do with it here, unless we can find an ice-pack to cool the burns ... best bet is to patch it and get us outta here.”

“Try not to sound surprised.” Thera’s tone was dry, watching what looked like an argument about to break out among the rest of Donovan’s cabal. “For people so desperate to survive, they put a lot of qualifications on how.”

Was that a little harsh? Possibly, though her concern about that was fading further the longer she stuck around. A war correspondent, a biologist, an ex-cop who talked to everyone like they were a perp in an interview room with the cameras switched off ... some of the others had a quiet, less blustery sort of heart, but they were still followers toeing the line.

Thera watched them a moment more then exhaled, stretched her neck with a faint pop of the joints. “Like I said ... get me the schematics on those shuttles and I’ll tell you if I can fly one. If you and Chris want to run at this even without these turkeys ... I’m in.”
