He should have seen it coming. He knew it was impossible for anyone to put up with him him for too long, he knew it was impossible for someone to stay after so long and, in honesty, he didn’t blame the other for breaking up with him. He blamed himself for thinking it would last.
A little whimper left Midas lips and he grabbed the teddy bears that his now ex-boyfriend had given him, tossing them in a bag as tears started rolling down his cheeks. The phrase “too good to be truth” had never made more sense than in that moment.
Midas remembered a conversation he once had with a heartbroken and drunk Romeo and how he had told him that love was a beautiful things and beautiful things never lasted, they always end up fading away. Midas didn’t want to believe those words, they had come from a man whose heart was aching, they couldn’t be true but now, he realised, that perhaps they were. That maybe Romeo was right and love was painful and it vanished in the blink of an eye. But he was so naive, so filled with hope that maybe things would be forever, like in fairy tales or the movies he liked to watch in his blanket fort.
“I-I’m sorry...” He hiccuped, cleaning his tears with the sleeve of his shirt ad he placed the teddy bears in the bag with tender care. “I-I j-just c-can’t k-keep y-you. I-I’m n-not...” His lip quivered and he stopped what he was doing, covering his face with both hands as he began to cry. He couldn’t understand why they called it heart break. It wasn’t just his heart hurting, it was his whole body.
It wasn’t fair. Why wasn’t he good enough? What had he done wrong? He didn’t knew. He didn’t want to know. But the thought was still there. Was it his stutter? His insecurities? Having too many teddy bears? Eating too many sweets? Was he not attractive enough? He wasn’t as athletic looking as the other Marks but... Was it something he said? Something he did? Something he didn’t do?
“S-S-Stop!” He covered his ears, wanting to stop his thoughts, his pain. “I-It’s not f-f-fair! I-I tried! I t-t-tried!” A sob left his lips and his shoulders shook as he cried. “I-I r-really t-tried...”
