     The ritual had been a success. And if it could keep her asleep - and ultimately shield the guardian’s heart - for just a little longer, then all the cloak and dagger would have been worth it. Alice hated herself for omitting the full truth from her friend, but Penny probably wouldn’t have gone through with it if she’d known all the details. Chaos, on the other hand, understood necessity. He’d been born out of it. And she knew he would agree.

One life. A simple exchange that would both boost and ensure the longevity of the Protector of the Southern Realm. It was a bargain. No question at all.

Even within the magic circle that cut them off from the normal world and all its mirrored realms Alice could feel the trade already taking place. It was getting harder and harder to breathe. Her eyes steadily growing dimmer. But she saw the reflection of it on Penny and it made everything okay. She looked radiant, carrying a healthy glow that had never been there before.

Alice didn’t want to risk waking her up, but couldn’t keep herself from leaning in and placing the softest kiss to her temple. A promise. “I love you.” She whispered with a smile. “My heart will be with you. Always.” It was, after all, her life force inhabiting Penny’s body, the conditions that ailed the guardian transfered to the young witch.

Rising to her feet, she took in a deep breath with difficulty and crossed the threshold, sealing both their fates. Reaching a hand out, she smiled gently at the familiar feeling of Chaos’ presence coming to meet hers. Without the spirits that helped Penny through her conditions, Alice could no longer see.

“I’m sorry.” First and foremost. For roping him into this. Making him lie alongside her. For possibly giving him a reason to mourn too. “And thank you.” Finding his face with her free hand, she guided him closer so she could press her lips to his cheek. “I love you too.”
