She is kind, sweet-natured, polite and optimistic, and on the Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism, she falls very much on the idealistic side. Her innocence will often inspire protective feelings in heroic characters, and she is frequently one of the more beautiful characters because of the convention that Beauty Equals Goodness. Unfortunately, her innocence also often makes her woefully naive, making her a prime target for a villain seeking to take advantage of her, often in an I Have You Now, My Pretty fashion.

There are a lot of Characterization Tropes that can be used to quickly and non-verbally introduce a character, and one of the sadder ones is the Friendless Background. The character will, through fate or choice, be presented as not having any friends, or at least not within easy visiting or communication range. They will be eating lunch alone, or looking forlornly/enviously at others with friends and Love Interests, and usually be found immersed in reading, video games, or some other highly solitary activity.

Humans need affection (physical as well as verbal) to thrive. This trope is about characters who have been deprived of affection for so long that they desperately crave it. While this can be interpreted as the opposite of Hates Being Touched, it doesn't have to be: sometimes the person Hates Being Touched but wants affection anyway, or even more because of it. Sometimes, a character who's like this could become so vulnerable/naive that they are willing to accept affection from anyone despite the fact the person may only be using them for their own personal gain. I Just Want to Have Friends is a Sub-Trope.

Like, imagine taking Rey to the theatre or a art museum or, I dunno, a sporting event. She’d find the whole thing FACSINATING AND WONDERFUL and I am here for it because she is so Pure and Good and Derserves Nice Things.

I understand there’s no shame in being a mary sue because we’ve been living with gary stus for years but I don’t understand this sort of talk because there’s an explanation for everything Rey does. She’s lived on her own scavenging parts from machines in order to survive- of course she’d know how they work. She’s around so many other species at Nima Outpost- of course she’d know how to speak at least a little of their language. She’s watched the ships leave the planet, she’s got hundreds of damaged craft to search through every day and she says she’s flown on planet before- of course she’d figure out how to fly. 

she’s lived on her own since she was five. of course she’d know how to defend herself. of course she’d know how to survive...
