Standing from her seat at the mirror, she brushed off her dress and put some finishing touches on her hair. “I mean, imagine the impact on your reputation!” Turn, check back of dress, “Couldn’t possibly allow that to happen.”

... That was not the response she expected. It was not one she wanted, or so she might claim in the first second or two of arching and squirming like a recalcitrant cat. She was angry, dammit, rightfully so, and she would like to keep being angry, thank you, rather than letting herself be soothed.

But the Doctor was bigger than her, far more solid, and for a very odd and remarkable change, it wasn’t him she was angry with. His lapel brushed on her cheek, the blue and grey almost plain when the question mark on his collar and polkadot tie were the only other things she could see. For another half-second her shoulders remained defiant before she gradually, finally acquiesced, relaxing against him and letting her arms settle around him in return.

“Don’t let this go to your head.”

“Okay, I tried, through burning and maybe only destroying one pan, I tried.” ------------

“I’m ...” Thera blinked once, puzzled and not really sure what to make of that announcement. Then a few more times, quickly, wincing a little at the scorching smell that had wafted along in his wake.

So, she was ...? She supposed she ought to be something - flattered? Impressed? Concerned? To her ‘pan’ suggested ‘food’ and ‘cooking’, but she’d never really thought about whether the Doctor had any culinary skills, or even the urge to use them. “Sorry, I’m confused ...” That was best word and totally true, “What exactly were you giving a try?”

Thera was currently experiencing a rather severe case of deja vu; the kind that eased onto her awareness like muscle memory and dragged her back several centuries. She had worked here, this library, these very stacks, on and off again throughout the Bodleian’s long history, and the scent of the pages and bindings had never really changed.

She shook off another tug of her memory (it slipped back whenever she focused her attention somewhere else) and was reaching up for another book when something caught her eye. Well, there was a distraction out of nostalgia if she really needed one - the eye-burst of technicolour coat and a fluff of bright curls standing out like a halo among the Library’s varied shades of brown.

Watching her. Oh dear, what had she done now?

Thera pulled the last book off the shelf and tucked it under her arm with the others before crossing the room, waiting until she was close enough to whisper when she spoke. “Auditions for Library Cherub are the next floor down.”
