He’d never been real, but his absence left her feeling like something was missing.

It had felt like completion, the last line in their triangle drawn taught between them under the stars. In his absence she missed him. She missed his smile, his tittering laugh, the dramatic flair with which he flourished and danced through the stories he told. She missed the way he made Fouroh smile like he was seeing the sunrise for the first time.

Spirit had been right for them. He was meant to be a part of their lives, to complete their triangle. She’d had them both, her whimsical boy and her ferocious boy, their hands warm and solid in hers. For a brief, sweet moment, everything had been perfect.

And then it was gone, stardust scattered across the floor and a bitter reminder the world was a wretched and terrible place.
