put a flower in aigis’ hair. / accepting
you’ve no sense of touch, just eyes, to see hamuko’s hand come up, and press something into your hair. your hair must be soft. you know the materials it was made from - plastic and fur, maybe? is that why her hand lingers just a moment there? it makes no difference to you, but all the same - your heart would have picked up slightly, if you had one.
if you had a heart. you have mechanics, you have coding, you have wires and plastic sheets. you have predispositions that grant you the honour of summoning a persona, little accidents made from the world’s most obvious serendipity. you are not a miracle. everything about you is deliberate, carved out by someone else’s hand for someone else’s conquest. why is it that the gun barrels in your fingers are made for more than just anti-shadow bullets? why is it that memories flicker in the base of your skull that do not belong to you of violence against flesh and blood?
you are, at best, a sword gripped in someone else’s hand. you are, at worst, a disaster. you do your best, so you are the sword. and if you could choose anyone’s hand to wield you, it would be her’s.
“thank you, hamuko-san.” you crinkle your eyes round the edges, feel something burst in your chest - emotions are still new, and you don’t have a name for this one yet - and pull the flower out to look at it, look long and hard. it’s blue, like your eyes, and you think of course she thought to choose one that matched. the painful feeling in your chest only tightens, trickles down. it burns. it squeezes. you want to drop to your knees with the pain of it. instead, you pull your mouth into a smile, and tuck the flower back behind your ear.
it’s a compromise.
“does... it suit me?” you feel the shyness trickle into your voice, take note of how genuine it feels. is this what being alive feels like?

martha had been a single mother for a little over ten years and she was damn good at it. when she had first found out that she was pregnant, she had no idea what to think. but when the father of her baby left her? the one thing she could think of was just how devastated she was. she had loved john with all of her heart and the fact that he could leave her so easily absolutely shattered her heart to bits and pieces. she thought he loved her, too, but she guessed not. oh well, she had thought. she could take care of a child on her own. she had a well paying job and was good with children, she figured that it wouldn't be too hard. and it wasn't. frances-eleanor was a great kid. martha couldn't have asked for a better daughter. everything was okay up until frances-eleanor turned ten. until john showed up.
the last thing martha had expected to see was john. she was perfectly content to forget about him entirely -- the pain he caused her was too much and life would be a lot easier if john himself left her mind. but john never did leave her mind. sure, she was beyond angry with him for abandoning her without so much as a word, but she was so weak, so incredibly in love with him that forgetting him was nowhere near easy (and maybe part of her didn't want to forget him at all). forgetting him was certainly much harder when he was back and apologizing a million times to her.
the apologies were nothing if not incredibly endearing and also incredibly annoying. she appreciated that john was so desperate for forgiveness, that much was certain. but she didn't know if she really could forgive him after everything he put her through. frances-eleanor had certainly been eager to have john in her life which, perhaps, made martha want john back even more. she had wanted him back for a very long time, that much was for sure, so maybe forgiving him wasn't too farfetched an idea.
eventually, martha gave up. she gave up on being angry and sad (she was still hurt, though, and probably always would be). all she wanted was to hold john and be held by him again. she missed loving him. she missed taking care of him. she missed everything about their time together before he left. eventually, the apologies finally wore her down enough to give him a chance.
"i forgive you," she says quietly after yet another apology from john. she lets out a breath, feels a heavy weight being lifted from her shoulders. "oh, wow, that felt good to say. um. i forgive you. i forgive you, john. i missed you so much and i'm tired of being upset and angry with you. i just want to love you again. just like old times."
