the voice — that’s what sam recognizes first. and he does as they ask, turning slowly towards the familiarity. his eyes land on them and he does almost a half frown like he doesn’t know how to feel about their presence. he’d been separated from dean for a while now, trying to get clean of the demon blood. and yet, here they were, staring at each other in a roadside bar that was slowly deteriorating every day.

that’s the only scenario he can imagine that would bring ash to him; that dean’s hurt or broken and needs him. because maybe, that’s the only way sam would be able to forgive himself.
