Male parent shoots and kills son after son says, ‘Why don’t you just shoot me?’— Grand Rapids  Michigan reporting

The 69-year-old Newaygo County man is held without bond in the shooting death of his 38-year-old son.

— “A witness indicated the victim said, ‘Why don’t you just shoot me?’” Prosecutor Ellsworth Stay told District Judge Kevin Drake on Wednesday.

Stay said that the father tried to shoot the .22-caliber rifle but it misfired. He tried again and struck his son in the back, piercing his heart and a lung, Stay said. The victim died at the scene.

The judge granted the prosecutor’s request to continue to hold Darrell Dakan without bond. Stay said that alcohol was “prominent” in Dakan’s life and has led to “anger or other problems.”

Hudsonville parents, including some locked out of meeting, urge school district to make masks optional

HUDSONVILLE, MI – Dozens of Hudsonville parents and community members are urging Hudsonville Public Schools to remove mask mandates in school and make masks optional for students amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The demand from parents Thursday comes as Michigan leads the nation in coronavirus cases, with school outbreaks and new cases among young people playing a large role in that surge.

Superintendent Doug VanderJagt said the district will continue to mandate masks in accordance with guidelines from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Holland man threatened to kill President Biden, Gov. Whitmer to start revolution, attorney general says

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – A Holland man is accused of making death threats against President Joe Biden, U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Joshua Docter, 21, is accused of threatening to shoot and kill the officials and “‘be the catalyst’ for a new American revolution,” authorities said.

He is charged with threat of terrorism and using a computer to commit a crime, both 20-year felony charges.
