Lily pondered the scissors in her hands, opening and closing them experimentally. Her father was at work in the mines and her auntie, who was looking after her, had fallen asleep on the couch. Lily had found some scissors under the old chest of drawers that sat in their living area, and now, she had her chance. She sat herself in front of the dusty mirror and got to work on her long hair.

When her auntie woke up, she screamed. She snatched the scissors from where Lily had abandoned them on the floor, but it didn’t matter any more. She had given herself a fantastic new haircut, if she did say so herself. Auntie was just being dramatic.

When her father came home, auntie started babbling about how sorry she was, how she’d taken an eye off her for a second – which was a lie, but Lily was no snitch – and how she had no idea what had happened. Her father examined his daughter carefully, running his fingers through her newly short, choppy hair. He then scooped her up and smiled. 

“Ah, my adventurous little girl,” he said. Auntie looked like she might faint. “It looks fantastic.”
