CAPTAIN AVA HEADCANONS

i keep forgetting that her scar mirrors the shape of the x-ray of the light and also the cracks in both the porthole glass and the seedling pendent AND simon getting crucified in the sm-13 at the end of the movie and wOW THIS MOVIE IS JUST TOO GOOD !!!!!!!! anyway, some rambles about our favorite captain below the cut ↯

based on this post from atxfx on insta, i think ava got her scar from when the sm-8 was lost. maybe the towlines snapped when the hemorover fell / got dragged into the trench or caves or wherever, and one of the hooks came back up and caught her in the face. i don’t think she was captain yet at the time though, and here’s why ↯

if we assume that ellie / the eel / the research team really didn’t know that filament station had been destroyed, that means that the sm-8 had to have sunk before that happened, roughly 16 years before the events of the movie. and if we assume ava is around the same age as simon, that would put her in her late teens at the time. while i do think she made the rank of captain pretty young, that’s too young imo. i think she served on the towship for at least a few years as some sort of specialist. maybe in communications, since some of ellie’s dialogue implies that she was in direct contact with ava and thinks that she “left us down here” personally…ouch

i think she’s originally from filament station. i don’t think she was there at the time of the battle but i think she had family there that she lost. i wonder if she went out of her way to request carrying out simon’s convict realization process because of that. the way she taunts him about the salvaged glass feels a little too pointed to just be a general anger at him for what happened. she plays her cards so close to her chest otherwise, i don’t think she would’ve be so spiteful about it if it weren’t terribly personal (although you could argue that with a population so low, everything feels more personal now…)

speaking of filament, i think this little bauble she keeps on her belt is scrap salvaged from that station after it was destroyed. @water-activated-light posted this post a bit ago sharing that it seems to be an inner part to a sink faucet !! it would be interesting (read: devastating) if the towship was ordered to abandon the retrieval effort for the sm-8 in order to do salvage work on filament (“we salvaged that glass…”), and a younger, less hardened ava allows herself to take something small to remember it by, something easily overlooked that would've probably ended up getting melted down and repurposed anyway :[

i also think that the ring she wears might be something captains of the c.o.i are given to symbolize their rank !! this idea is total fluff but i just can’t let it go, what if they can’t make david captain without that ring?

one more point, i really really like the headcanon that ava and david are childhood friends, and the movie supports it!! or they’ve at least known each other since the quiet rapture, and their banter is just too fun :) how long has she known jack though? did she pick him specially to be part of her crew when she made captain? hmmm
