All Time Low // Backseat Serenade
okay this is something I've noticed a couple of times lately since I've been listening to so much All Time Low but I'm only just now making a post on it lol
what I've noticed is they mention hurricanes a lot. as someone from a state where a lot of hurricanes happen, I love the representation 😭
first lyric I'll mention is "there's a little child with a million ways to feel, caught up in a hurricane" in Nightmares. I love that lyric sm, it really makes me picture the story of the song clearly. the speaker is singing about a child (whether it's a random child or his own younger self) who doesn't have a very stable home life. as a result, he has a lot of big feelings. he has parents who argue a lot and he can always hear it from the "paper thin walls" that are mentioned in the song. and he also gets nightmares even though time has passed and he's presumably not around his parents anymore. I interpret the hurricane mention as both what goes on in the home and the feelings that the child has as a result. hurricanes are big, crazy, and they cause destruction. there can't really be anything done to stop them. I'll probably dive deeper into this song in another post lol
next lyric is "caught in the eye of a hurricane, darling, we had to say goodbye" on Last Young Renegade (going to say real quick that that's my favorite ATL title track). similarly, I picture the story of the song better due to the mention. I'm interpreting this lyric as the speaker and the person he used to be with dealt with hard times, whether that was due to their relationship or external forces, and they had to part ways. but as we know, the eye is the calmest part of the hurricane. so maybe their relationship was the one solace from the chaos in their lives, but they still had to go their separate ways. I could probably theorize further, but I'll likely make a longer post about this song some other time and do a deeper dive then
both of the previous songs I mentioned were from Last Young Renegade, but now I'm gonna switch over to a song on Don't Panic
"backseat serenade, dizzy hurricane" is part of the chorus on Backseat Serenade, and here we have another hurricane mention. this admittedly isn't a song I listen to as much (nothing against it, it's just not super high on my favorites list). one other thing I'd like to mention about it is that it has some of that summer imagery that shows up in a decent bit of ATL's other songs (you guys can likely expect a post from me on that at some point too lol). it paints a picture (speaking of paint, I can name at least 2 songs that mention painting. and yes, there will probably be a post about that at some point too. also, i love how one of those songs started playing while I was typing this 😭) of a summer romance. I like that it does that because summer is when hurricane season starts. so idk if that was intentional on their part, but it was smart
next song that includes a hurricane mention is Therapy from Nothing Personal with the "but they tore me apart like a hurricane". unlike a couple of the other songs I've mentioned in this post so far, this isn't referring to a relationship. it's what happens within the speaker. and it also has a lyric that goes "my ship went down in a sea of sound", and that was a nice touch since hurricanes form over the ocean and they wreck a lot, including ships. the speaker has been torn apart due to a lot of things that went wrong in life, similar to how hurricanes tear apart things. and now he needs therapy cause, in his words, he's "a walking travesty". I don't listen to this one much, but it's pretty iconic
finally, we have "Caroline", which is a Future Hearts song. this one's hurricane lyric is "stuck inside your hurricane, how'd it come to this?". here we've got another song about a relationship, and the hurricane metaphor describes a messy/unstable relationship (if it can even be called that, cause it sounds more like a situationship or something). the speaker is caught up in Caroline's "hurricane" because they aren't in a stable/serious relationship. to get more specific, the verse with the hurricane lyric discusses how Caroline and the speaker are at a point where they were "broken up", for lack of a better expression. but the speaker doesn't want this. instead, he wants them to be more than they currently are
and that brings this post to an end! my next longer ATL post will likely discuss all the songs where flowers are mentioned cause I noticed flower imagery is used in a decent bit of ATL songs. or it'll be an analysis of Last Young Renegade cause I love that song (and as I mentioned in a post the other day, it makes me nostalgic for experiences I didn't have 🫠). OR alternatively, I'll discuss Missing You cause that's another depressing but uplifting song I love (I just realized Future Hearts has so many of those lol. there's a reason that's my favorite All Time Low album 😭). anyway, we shall see what comes next. it could be one of the aforementioned posts or it could even be something completely different that hasn't come to mind yet

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Though no one had said anything outright, Aurora knew what her classmates thought happened out there between her and Lux. They’d always been familiar, and, bless his heart, her best friend didn’t quite seem to grasp their implications, unintentionally furthering their gossip.
Her heart, however, belonged to Ignatius, equal parts steadfast and hot-tempered. If he felt the same way, then there were a billion firsts she wanted to have before a possible death at the hands of humans.
…Serenade me to this song 💫
