Finally making an intro post after being on here for almost a year now lmao (created my account in either November or December of last year, can't remember which offhand at the moment). I'm very late, I know 🫠

Hi, name's Jasmine! nicknames are okay too as long as I agree with them (but only if we're close)

I'm a summer baby! but winter is my favorite season (well, the few days of cooler weather I get a year lol. that's what happens when you live in a hot area 🫠)

I'm currently in college, so I won't always be very active on here or ao3 (where I post my fics)

I'm neurodivergent (specifically AUDHD), so I won't always catch on to the tone of something being said/understand whether something's being said seriously or as a joke. just want to make that clear if I don't understand something!

some of my favorite bands/artists are Hollywood Undead (I absolutely love them to death. undead until I die 🫶🏼), Set It Off, VOILÀ, Olivia Rodrigo, The Cab, Evanescence, Mother Mother, MARINA, Get Scared, and All Time Low (recently reentered my ATL phase, so I'll likely be posting about them a lot. All Time Low forever)

I write a lot, which a lot of you probably already know since I usually make at least one post a day about it lol. I also enjoy drawing, reading, and listening to music

I don't like getting spammed, as that feels overstimulating at times

don't read my works if you don't like them instead of sending hate (I mean that in general, by the way. not just regarding my works. just don't interact with me if you don't like me)

don't vent to me without asking first, as I'm not always in the right headspace for that

Please don't pressure me to update my fics. I'm often busy with college, so I can't always promise consistent fic updates. They get updated when I have the time and motivation to write. Hounding me for updates isn't going to make me write any faster. In fact, it'll have the opposite effect.

Regarding the topic of my fics, DO NOT use them or any of my art for any sort of AI-related purposes. This is a strictly no AI zone.

Don't repost any of my works (fics and art) without permission. Translations are okay as long as I'm given credit.

Wake Up Sunshine ranking?

hiiiii! sorry I took so long to answer this! I ended up re-listening to the album both because I wanted to feel that summer vibe it gives and because it had been a while since I heard some of the songs on it

...and I gotta be honest, I think Wake Up Sunshine might have now taken place as my favorite ATL album. it was always up there on my favorites, but listening to the whole thing again has made me love it that much more. the sound is just >>>>>> and while I do have my favorites, this is a solidly no-skips album for me. I enjoy all of it

okay, now for my ranking!

1. Sleeping In. okay so this was one of the songs I hadn't heard in awhile and now I'm wondering how I ever got to that point. this song is SO good omg. it has that calm feeling to it, and I always love that in a love song (especially one by ATL, their love songs are on-point). I love the quiet domesticity of the relationship being sung about and how comfortable the people are with each other. it's a nice way to show that relationships aren't always all about going big or grand gestures. sometimes the quiet moments are the most meaningful. I would love that kind of relationship some day 🫠 one other thing that stood out to me was how one of the lyrics is "but we fall right back into bed like it's all just a game". in a lot of other songs I've heard, the "like a game" phrase is typically utilized in a more negative context/wondering whether the relationship is real or it was just a game to the other person. but here, that's kinda subverted. it doesn't sound negative at all, it's just two people in a relationship and the "like a game" isn't seen as something bad, it's just seen as another part of their relationship. anyway, I ended up liking this one so much that it dethroned Glitter & Crimson as my #1 favorite on WUS. easy 10/10

2. Glitter & Crimson. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song so much. I don't think there are enough words to describe how much I love it. it's cathartic, it's motivating, it's amazing. especially as someone who's not straight, that bridge really does something to me. I love the message it sends of "hey, I want equality and I'm not backing down until I get it". just...yeah. same bro. I also want that. this song makes me feel a bit more empowered, y'know? idk if I'll ever be the type of person to be "out and proud" (especially considering where I live 🫠), but the bridge and the song as a whole make me feel like maybe I will get to that point one day. that bridge is one of the most cathartic pieces of music I've ever heard, and I've listened to a lot of music. I love it so much. 10/10, no questions

3. Pretty Venom. this song is angry, but not in the "typical" way. instead of being fast-paced/high-energy/angry-sounding, it sounds more like the type of dull anger that's also mixed with sadness, if that makes sense. the speaker is feeling low because he was betrayed by someone, but he doesn't seem to really be in the raging or wanting revenge stage. he's just down and doesn't have the energy to be any angrier than he already is. I love the chorus of this one so much. the tune is just YES. it works so well as an interlude, too. most of the songs on this album are more upbeat/faster-paced, but this one is slower and more depressing. so good choice on ATL's part. giving this one another 10/10

4. Melancholy Kaleidoscope. so to me, this song was both upbeat and depressing somehow lol. and those songs are almost always guaranteed to be ones I enjoy. this was no different. I love how the first verse started with "nobody wants to hear a sad song" and the second started with "I wanna hear another fast song". and then the closing lyric of the chorus "can't be one hundred if you're only giving ninety-five". it's motivational in its own way. sure, 95 isn't 100. but it's close. 10/10

5. Wake Up Sunshine. while this one isn't my favorite title track, it's absolutely an amazing one. the "somebody loves you for yourself" lyric is another comforting one to me. that and the bridge with its lyric of "you don't have to lean on the crutch of a daydream to see that you shine like a star". it's a nice lyric that gives the message of "you don't have to try so hard to be someone when you already are someone". to be honest, I often need those reminders. one other thing I love is the "are you living well in a living hell?" lyric. it just flows SO nicely. it's pleasing to the ear. rounding out my top 5 with this one. 10/10

6. Summer Daze. I love the summertime sadness/nostalgia feel to it. I've talked about loving ATL's bridges before, but this one is probably pretty high up there too. it's actually in my head now that I've started talking about it lol. just as they say, "it's like I heard my favorite song". one of the lyrics that stands out to me the most is "but nothing gold can stay, you told me so". not really sure how to explain it, but I just love it. 10/10

7. Safe. okay so this one gives me the urge to just start driving and keep going without a destination in mind lol. the chorus especially, given the words in it. the lyric "take a little time to dry your salty ocean tears" made me think of the Bubblegum lyric "now let me overstate how much I'd like to dry your salty eyes". I legit cannot listen to one of ATL's songs without being reminded of one (or more) of their other songs lmao. and I love the lyric "you're gonna be all right if you just stop thinkin' it over". as someone with anxiety, that one really speaks to me on a deeper level. so often, I'll be worked up over something that isn't even a big deal, but it feels like a big deal to me in that moment. I might have to start repeating this lyric to myself whenever I'm feeling anxious. 9.5/10

8. January Gloom. while I like its counterpart Summer Daze more, I love January Gloom. I remember listening to it a lot earlier this year and relating a little too much cause I often struggle with post-holiday blues (or January gloom, as I've taken to now calling it lol). I like how a lot of it sounds upbeat on the surface, but upon closer listening, it sounds a bit more depressing. which I think also works for the general depression experience. trying to appear and sound happy while feeling low on the inside. as always, one or my favorite parts of this one was the bridge. ATL always has such great bridges, and WUS showcased a lot of them. 9/10

9. Getaway Green. here's another song I didn't remember anything about. it was nice to hear it again! I love the nostalgic tone it has (just like a lot of the album). it's a nice song about reminiscing on the past and looking at it fondly. I'm always a sucker for that lmao. I love the lyric "we were getaway green in a world of black and white". I also always love when color is used to describe things like this. the world was black and white, but the people being sung about brought some color to the world at large...and into each other's worlds. it's beautiful. 9/10

10. Some Kind Of Disaster. oh...this one. I can feel the nostalgia rushing in. this was my first ATL song I ever heard and needless to say, it got me to keep listening to them lol. I love the song from start to finish. the chorus is an earworm in the best way, and I also love the verses and bridge. they all tell a nice story of someone who starts out as a kid who dreamt and then lived the life. while I do wish I could've discovered ATL sooner, I'm also happy that this could be my introduction to them. it was effective in causing me to listen to the rest of their music, so it did its job lol. 9/10

11. Trouble Is... this is another one I enjoy. to me, it kinda has the same vibes as Summer Daze where the people in the songs have a situationship-type thing and they don't know where they stand with each other. bonus points for the chorus. I love how Alex sings "trouble is" and how it leads into the rest of the chorus. I also love how he screams "TROUBLE IS" during the second pre-chorus lol. I kinda view this one as a sequel of sorts to "Clumsy" (or maybe just a story about someone else but it has similarities). while that one has more of a young love vibe, this one sounds like it's being sung from an older perspective. albeit, an older perspective that might be making some similar mistakes. 8.5/10

12. Basement Noise. dude when I tell you the chorus is such an earworm...it's still in my head even a day later lmao. I don't think it's ever getting out of my head 🫠 but to speak more on the song itself, I really liked it! this one also had a tinge of nostalgia, just in a different way compared to the other nostalgic songs on the album. it's a nice snapshot at how far the boys have come since they started the band as kids. and now they've been at it for over 20 years, making amazing music. it even made me feel nostalgic even though I'm still a new-ish fan (4 and a half years of listening as of this month, here's to many more). I'm so proud of them. 8/10

13. Favorite Place. okay here's another one I hadn't heard in awhile. not since the first time I listened to the album, if I'm remembering right. so it kinda felt like a new song to me since I didn't remember it at all lol. but I did like it! the lyric "I saw your face in a photograph" grabbed my attention pretty fast. which isn't uncommon. as someone who's always taking pictures, any reference to photographs will grab my attention. one other thought I had pertains to the "so can we close the space between us now? it's the distance we don't need" and I just sat there and thought "that's pretty ironic considering the time when this album came out" lol. anyway, my ranking. 8/10

14. Clumsy. okay so while I enjoyed this song, I don't personally vibe with it as much as I do with most of the other songs on here. but that's not to say I don't like it, cause I do. it's still a good song and there are things I enjoy about it. starting with the first verse, specifically the lyric "I flew too close to the sun, I fell back to earth like a stone". I always love a good Icarus reference. it fits so many different experiences. it's a pretty good song about young love and the mistakes that can often come with it. I'll go ahead and rank it 7.5/10

15. Monsters. soooo my view on this one has actually changed a bit since I first got into ATL. this was another one of the first ATL songs I heard. I enjoyed it a lot at the time, even listened to it on repeat at one point (I truly did get into them during this era considering two of the first songs of theirs I heard were WUS ones lol). but I enjoy it a little less nowadays. I don't dislike it or anything, though! I might have just listened to it a little too much lol. I've still got the nostalgia-tinted feelings toward it and I do think it's a good song, I just like the rest of the album's songs better. I'll give this one a 7/10

heyo, everyone! I'm back with my month in review post for May! I've got a couple things to say

first of all, I'll take a minute to talk about hyperfixations. for most of this month, I was still hyperfixating on This Is Us...and now that one has taken a backseat in favor of me hyperfixating on another show I loved as a teenager: Steven Universe. I first got into it back when I was 15, and the interest has stuck since then! in fact, it's one of the interests my siblings and I all share. I love the gay gems show so much

now for the music

I started out this month by listening to the new Hollywood Undead song "All My Friends". and they released another one the other day, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. rest assured, I will be making a post about it once I do listen to it lol. VOILÀ also released a new single this month but I haven't heard it yet. at this point, I'll just wait until the album comes out since there's only a week and a half until then. I've been listening to Hollywood Undead a lot this month, I told y'all I never stay away for long

next, the reading

let's start with books. I've read 3 books this month (finished one just earlier today, in fact). I read Sunrise On The Reaping (the newest Hunger Games book), Camp, and Meet Cute Diary. I loved all of them

now for fanfic. I finished reading a This Is Us longfic earlier this month and I loved it. and then I've spent most of this weekend reading Steven Universe fanfics cause that turned out to be my next reawakened hyperfixation (the Lars angst goes hard, chat)

now for the writing portion!

I wrote and posted another This Is Us fanfic a couple weeks ago. then earlier this weekend, I posted the next chapter of The Boy From The Bookstore. I've also been working on a birthday fic for a mutual of mine (though I'm already late cause their birthday was yesterday 🫠). AND last but not least, I started working on a Steven Universe fic! yes, I'm at that stage of hyperfixation where I'm both reading and writing fics lmao. I'm almost done writing it, so it'll be posted probably pretty soon. I'm really proud of it, so I hope readers enjoy it too

now for what I've been watching

my family and I started watching Once Upon A Time a few weeks ago, and it's been pretty interesting so far! one of my favorite things is how we've been noticing so many actors from other shows we've watched lol. it's also been fun to watch the show's take on fairy tales. at the time of writing this, we're in the middle of season 3

the next thing I'll mention is the season 5 finale of Ghosts. not to spoil too much in case anyone else who watches it is reading this post, but that cliffhanger though. what makes things worse is Ghosts isn't even coming back until mid-season. so...January of next year :') at least we'll be getting the usual Halloween and Christmas specials though. I am excited for those!

I've been watching some more episodes of That Was Us, but I haven't for the past couple of days. been too busy reading SU fanfics lol

heyo, my fellow All Time Low fans! I'm back with another ATL essay...over a month later lol. once again, that wasn't intentional. this month has just been a lot. leave it to me to be less active for awhile and then come back out of nowhere 🫠 but that aside, I finally figured out which song to analyze next after a mutual sent me an ask about how I'd rank the Everyone's Talking album. I started talking about Oh No! and remembered how much I love it. so that'll be the subject today. all that being said, let's get into it

first verse, here we go

"I'm back on my feet, dancing through the week" just that first lyric sets the scene well. the saying "get back on one's feet" refers to being more stable, whatever that might entail. and it sounds like the speaker has reached that point. the speaker is not only back on his feet, now he's dancing. through the week, in fact. he's at a point where he's not just dragging himself through the days, he's dancing through them. he's in a better place

"I'm over the rain clouds, blue skies on repeat" once again, I love ATL's use of the weather (heh) in their songs. so many songs mention sunshine, and now rain clouds are being used. I guess you could say...the weather's always nice inside his head ;) okay I'll stop with the puns now lol. jokes aside, the speaker doesn't have any rain clouds hanging over him now. just blue skies for days

"been eating healthy, touching grass" next in the saga of better habits comes improving eating and touching some grass. good for the speaker (also I always find it funny when ATL adapts slang and slang-like words into their songs lol)

"and drinking happy, not to cope" even the speaker's drinking habits have changed. At one point, he relied on alcohol to cope with his problems. now he's gotten a handle on it and instead drinks happy

"I'm letting go of all my toxic traits" and here comes the next step in changing for the better. letting go of toxic traits is always an important step to take in self-improvement, and the speaker has reached that point too

"and holding on to hope" finally, the speaker is trying to maintain a sense of hope. hope for improvement, hope for things to stay good, hope for...well, pretty much anything

here comes the chorus...and with it, some doubt

"but if I'm not broken like I used to be, will you still find me interesting?" here's a question that a lot of public figures (especially musical artists) have likely wondered. a lot of them attract fans due to their sad music, it gives a sense of relatability that naturally, a lot of them flock towards. in this case, the speaker is wondering whether he'll still have fans if he's no longer broken like he used to be

"if I built my brand on feeling sad, do I need my broken hearted back?" the speaker is now continuing on with his line of questioning. now he wonders if he needs his broken heart/sad feelings back. after all, they're what he built his brand on. doesn't he need them to maintain a livelihood?

time for verse two

"I'm leveling out, safe and sound and sweet" the speaker has switched from his questions back to detailing how his mood and life have improved. he's safe, sound, and sweet. in terms of getting better, he's leveled up

"but there's a creeping feeling crawling underneath (underneath the surface)" unfortunately for the speaker, he hasn't been able to enjoy feeling better due to the lingering worries he has about his improved mental state

"and the apathy begets the fall" so what I think this lyric is supposed to refer to is how apathy can be a dangerous thing sometimes. the speaker is thinking back to when he was worse off mentally and how he (assumedly) didn't care much about what happened to him after a certain point. but as he notes, that leads to a fall

"sooner or later, it's me and all my vices pressed in vinyl on repeat" okay, the first thing I want to say about this lyric is that I love how it clashes with the earlier "blue skies on repeat" lyric. where the speaker had blue skies on repeat at first, now it's just him and his vices. except it's not even just him anymore. because he utilized his poor mental state to make so many songs, he feels like he can't escape that now. I took it to be figurative and literal. in the literal sense, the songs can be played on repeat. in the metaphorical sense, his old behavior patterns can also be repeated. on top of worrying that getting better isn't all it's cracked up to be due to the risk of not making art as well anymore, the speaker is likely also worried that his improvements are only temporary. he worries that he won't always be this happy. and it's true, he won't. just like anyone else, he'll have more hard times in the future. but what matters is how those times are dealt with

the original chorus is repeated again, but there's a bit more to it the second time around. so I'll be analyzing it too

"if I'm not dying inside underneath this smile no one believes" this is one of my favorite lyrics in the song. I love how it's worded (or sung I guess, lol). the speaker admits to having dealt with the feeling of dying inside...and he also admits to knowing that no one believes him when he tries to smile through the pain. they see right through him. but they still stick around because of the art he creates. I just love this lyric a lot

time for the bridge

"trying my hardest to make progress" aren't we all? that's something we can all relate to, I think. we're all just trying to make progress in whatever area of our lives it may be

"to be someone I can live with" once again, aren't we all? one other thing that stood out to me was how the speaker just mentioned trying to be someone he can live with. not even someone he can be happy with, just someone he can tolerate. makes it sound like he's sorta given up on being happy with himself and would just be satisfied with becoming someone he can live with

"but what if it's the madness in the man that makes the music?" here we have another good question. the speaker doesn't know if the music he makes comes from his abilities or if it was just fueled by his poor mental state. he's wondering if it was his "madness", so to speak, that was the reason for all the songs he's created

"and we knew this would be fruitless, all the greatest hits" the speaker's now wondering if all his greatest hits were fruitless. was it really worth it to have this specific career if it meant sacrificing his mental state. or exacerbating the mental health issues he already had

"the bullshit that I tell myself I'm good with till I'm not good anymore" this was a nice way of describing how one can convince themselves everything is fine. they can keep saying it, but it doesn't make it true (side note, it also makes me think of "Everything Is Fine". that whole song is the anthem of denial and trying to pretend to be fine lol)

now for the outro

I'll go ahead and end my lyric interpretation here and switch to some more of my own thoughts. this has always been one of my favorite songs from Everyone's Talking. it's in my top 3, even. I love it so much. it's a nice commentary on a question that a lot of artists deal with. even as a non-musician (though I do write), that's something I think about a lot
