How strange it is, to be brought back to the memories of a few years ago. Of checking on the dorms of the girls in the years below her at the academy to tell them it was one hour until curfew, before leaving for home. Peeling back old doors after the invitation to step inside, only to see forts and faux-battles and impromptu performances accompanied by joyful laughter. Hands reaching out towards the blonde, an older sister figure, asking her to join them. Sometimes she had, and sometimes they would be met with a gentle shake of Serena’s head and a smile. ‘Not tonight,’ She would muse, ‘--but it does look like fun.’

“There is childish and then there’s a huge mess waiting to happen that my soul doesn’t have the will to clean up,”

She speaks in her usual tone, arms embracing a book of her own close to the heroine’s chest. Cynthia would be pulling her hair out, could she see this display, Serena tells herself, unless it is nothing new-- a regular occurrence.

Wikstrom is happy to play when Serena notices the mandola beside the desk in his sparse bedroom. He'd brought her to the doorway to pick up one of the dozens of books stacked around his bed, romance novels, and he takes the instrument to the study to demonstrate. He picks a song about a mysterious village hidden in the forest filled with fantastic creatures. A nursery song.

Instruments have always intrigued the heroine. Be it their designs, the effort and time required to play them well, or how they might contribute to a large-scale piece-- never has Serena comes across one that has not grabbed her curiosity. A testament to her love of music, perhaps, and so, when Wikstrom offers to play her something on this one-- a mandola, she heard him call it--, why the blonde cannot help but to nod in a silent but eager fashion.

What she did not expect, however, is for the lyrics of the piece he chooses to play to stick to her mind her more than the instrument itself.

A mysterious village, hidden away in a forest. It takes little more than a second for the champion to know exactly what place he is unknowingly referring to. The Pokemon Village, located deep in the Winding Woods-- the place where Xerneas had taken injured and dying pokemon during that war three thousand years ago. A place where humans must be judged worthy to be there by its inhabitants, or forever be out of its reach. Hidden by illusions and ever-changing layouts of the trees, and even though the song does not capture reality in its fullest about the village, it does seem to be based in reality.

Serena claims, hands clasped together in front of her chest. Despite that, she does not dare say that the place in the song not only exists, but that the blonde visits it routinely. No, for the young woman does not know if he has been approved by the pokemon there, nor given the right to visit by Wulfric or his wife.

Perhaps their styles of clothing differ greatly from one another, but that does not stop Serena from picking out a few outfits from what is available in his closet, neatly placing them out atop his bed in no real order. No-- in fact, the only instruction that escapes from the heroine’s form is for him to try them and show her whenever he is ready. That she will be waiting in one of the sitting rooms with Cynthia and Acacia, ready to help him look his best for that date with Bruno.

Too much on her shoulders. If the young woman agrees with anything that her adoptive father has said, it is that, although she is in no position to voice such things to anyone, let alone him. Grey eyes well up, a stray tear or two managing to slip past her defences and fall down the heroine’s cheek. Perhaps, she thinks, Wikstrom knows that all three points he mentions are all connected to aspects that the blonde worries about every now and then. If she has done enough; if she is smart enough to solve the problems she sets her mind to; if she is balancing everything well enough.

“...That’s... That’s not fair,”

She mumbles, a hand moving up to wipe underneath her eyes in a gentle manner. No, crying is not befitting of his heir, especially over an assumption Serena had asked for in the first place. Sometimes, the young woman wonders if she had known Wikstrom sooner, or he had been in a position able to act, if maybe everything with Team Flare could have gone differently. If his presence alone could have made up for her shortcomings, and prevented so much tragedy.

Are the bold set of words she goes with mere moments after hands press the doors to a study close behind her. Surely, Serena would not need to provide any more context than that for the rest of her speech, which claws viciously at the back of her throat. There is no need to be nervous-- deep down, perhaps the heroine knows that--, for he was the one who requested that she take up the position. To become his heir-- part of his family. Yet there is something so utterly terrifying about it all; of making such a big decision in a way that Serena could not easily take back. At her side, a Lucario stands, here after insisting on accompanying her to Wikstrom’s estate. Fingers fiddle amongst each other, a shallow, shaky breath passing pale lips. ‘Compose yourself.’

“...I think you know me better than most others, and so... you know how much I love my family. My mother, my father, Emma... I could never leave any of them-- not for any price in the world. To be blunt... you couldn’t buy my kinship even if I laid dying.”

Indeed, blood bears so much importance to the young woman-- being able to know and be in contact with her roots. To remain connected to the beliefs and ways of life she and her ancestors have long been raised on, and to acknowledge it with the utmost pride. Surely, Wikstrom must be aware of how important identity is to the blonde-- long before he even asked her to be his heir, perhaps. Yet it is still something she feels the need to make certain he is aware of, even if, in her eyes, she believes he only suggested simple adoption for legal purposes; not one of compassion.

“I’ve done my research. I’m not opposed to the idea of becoming your heir, even there is a lot to learn. And I’m not opposed being your daughter, either-- even if all you want is it in legal title only, and not the relationship that comes with it. I’m used to being kept at an arm’s distance by mother, and... truthfully, I think I’ve seen you as being like a father to me for some time. If you can promise me I won’t have to forsake my birth family, then...”

She pauses. Not deliberately, but as though all the words that the heroine has carefully prepared have reached their end. And somehow, Serena managed to muster enough courage to look him in the eye.

“I'll do it.”
