He had been half convinced that he would spend the rest of his life on the beach in Portugal. The sight of Sol lowering over the horizon had done wonders to capture the thoughtful contemplation he found himself wallowing in ever since he had fled from the apartment with a shaky smile and took to the skies with a sonic boom he knew everyone in a mile radius would be able to hear.
The sun had looked almost red in the distance for a moment but he knew it wasn't, not really. The red glow that swallowed the beach and tinted the ocean a soft lilac was just a combination of the refraction of yellow light and the longing for home deep in his chest.
He missed Daxam. Missed his father, with his playful gait and dimpled smile, and his mother, tragically elegant, even as she kneeled to tend to her garden, and Del…
Most of all he missed the person he had been all those years ago. He wondered if his family ached for him to return to Rao as they had or if they were proud of the man he had become. He had been asking that a lot lately.
(He remembered sometimes watching his father turn his face toward the sky while he was painting and asking why he did so.
His father had told him that those he had lost whispered to him in the prickle of warmth on his cheek.)
For now, the last rays or blood orange sunlight drifting over his face would have to be enough, though the cool ocean breeze had already stolen the last traces of warmth he had been enjoying.
He had been convinced that he would spend at least a few weeks in Portugal. Maybe he could help here, away from the hustle and bustle of New York, of Jersey, perhaps he could stay in one of these little coastal towns and simply be. At least give Kara space. Space and time away from him.
She deserved it, truly.
But then Jean had come, understanding and gentle and urging him to go home. That Kara needed him and really, now that he allowed his thought to drift from his own self pity, Donna needed him too. It was selfish of him to leave without speaking to her first. She had been so excited for him, helping him pick the bouquet and setting up fairy lights on the veranda only for him to abandon her, Kara, their apartment, Manhattan, in her time of need.
He had just been so distraught, drowning in a sea of uncertainty alone. But that had been of his own doing. Donna would have gathered the pieces of his broken heart and hugged him so tightly that perhaps for a moment he would have forgotten his pain if he had only let her.
Maybe he hadn't wanted to forget just yet.
But now he stood in their apartment, his eyes lingering sadly on the crumpled proposal in the living room as his feet scuffed against the floor.
"Donna," he breathed as the door opened, "I'm sorry I left, I-I didn't know."
“do you ever say things you don't mean?”
@ofcosmicwonder
“Well, I certainly try not to.” He laughed softly, his attention more on the stir-fry he was making than her question. "Daxam was rather similar to Krypton in our virtues," he explained easily, "although Krypton was a little draconian in their approach, at least compared to us. But truth, in its purest form, enlightens us, yes? To deceive unjustly would be, uh,.Duahz Zhehd ehl Kuhs. Er- to turn from the sun, you know?”
He shrugged, covering the pan and turning to Donna with a smile. “I’m just a person though, so sometimes I do, when I’m scared of the consequences of my truth or I want to protect my pride, but I try to act more courageously each day, in that regard. May I ask why you ask?”

(✉️ ➡️ @ofcosmicwonder): Donna! How could you not tell me?!
(✉️ ➡️ Donna Troy): Number 13 of New York’s 30 under 30 is eleven spots below where you should have been placed but it is acceptable, I suppose.
(✉️ ➡️ Donna Troy): You are truly remarkable. I am glad the rest of the city realizes it as well. :)
[✉️ → @ofcosmicwonder]: Hey, can I ask you something?
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: Or, rather, let me start with this...
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: I broke into your apartment.
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: Well, it was less ‘breaking and entering’ and more just... entering. The window was open.
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: But I was trying to find the bracelets and uh...
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: They weren’t where I left them so...
[...]
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: please tell me you moved them.
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: Or flung them into space. [...]
[✉️ → The wonderful Donna Troy]: Because otherwise I think I’m going to die.
[✉️ → @ofcosmicwonder]: I will be moving out
[✉️ → Donna]: I just... wanted to let you know myself.
