The world around him feels like it’s being spun rapidly on its axis. His eyes loll for a moment before refocusing on her. He can feel the warmth of blood dripping from his forehead. His lungs feel like they’re on fire, but he smiles no matter how weak it appears.

“It’s okay.” He manages to say. “It’s okay to let go. It’s what Uncle Luke would have wanted.”

He was back. Ben was back. For the first time in years, he was back to her and just when things seemed to finally be taking a turn for the better, after all the hardships, the force wanted to take him away AGAIN.

"No..." she breathed out. "No! Shut up. I don't care what Master Skywalker would have wanted. He's an hypocrite if that's what he would have wanted."

The story of how Luke Skywalker brought his father, Darth Vader, back to the light through sheer willpower and love for his father had been what inspired Voe to be as determined as she was. It was also why she hadn't believed Ben back when everything had gone south, when he'd said his own uncle attempted to kill him. She still respected Master Skywalker and owed him so much but, right now, he and anyone who believed she had to let go could go jump into a sarlacc pit. She wouldn't listen to any of that nonsense from anyone, and that included Ben.

So she forced herself to ignore the ache in her muscles, pulling his arm until his body was around her shoulders while wrapping her own arm around his legs, hauling him up into a fireman carry.

"If you die-" her voice fails her, cracking into a sob that she forces herself to swallow back, intent on delivering a proper threat. "If you leave me again, I WILL follow you to the living force and I will beat your ass for the rest of eternity, Solo."

She spoke through gritted teeth, both to hold back the avalanche of emotions and because he was heavy. But she was determined to get him out of there.

"Keep talking," she practically begged. "Tell me anything- remember that time we stole Master Luke's ship? Your mother was so angry when we got back home... did she lecture you afterwards?"

Training With Tension

If someone had told Voe that she would end up in this situation after everything that had happened, she'd have laughed at them. It would have been a tense, bitter sound, the sort of laugh that's filled with disbelief and makes people realize they fucked up. Then, she'd have told them to get out of her face, because they clearly were trying to insult her if they believed she'd find herself sparring —and not trying to hurt each other— with him of all people.

But here they were, despite everything. Because even after all these years, Ben/Kylo —she wasn't sure what to call him yet— was still the only one who could offer her a challenge.

They'd ended up in quite an interesting position. She'd managed to twirl his lightsaber out of his grasp, push him against the nearest surface faster than he could summon it back, and turned her lightsaber off, pressing the working end of the hilt just under his chin. Voe couldn't believe she'd actually managed to get the upper hand on him for once, after so many years of trying, the force was finally shinning upon her. Had she not been busy, she'd have pinched herself to make sure this was real.

But then he opened his mouth.

Voe hadn't realized just how close she'd gotten, until his breath fanned her lips when he spoke. She tensed and the tip of their noses touched. If she'd just tilted her head slightly, it wouldn't have been their noses touching.

Her cheeks turned a darker shade, hazel eyes going wide as she sputtered in her attempt to find her voice. She lowered her armed hand, dreading that she had to step back so that she could momentarily look away, play it off as trying to find where his lightsaber had landed and check any possible damage to their surroundings, all because her face suddenly felt like it was on fire.

"Since when do you resort for such low strategies?" she taunted, trying to keep some dignity and look composed.

She's alone. Of course she's alone. It's been years since THAT happened and while a part of her knows that even in dreams, this time around it felt so REAL.

Her chest hurts, the scar that she never allowed the doctors to rid her of burns because of the memory– or perhaps it's the fact that the panic completely prevents her from drawing in breaths. Focus, she tells herself. Even with the lightsaber providing some light, the room is too dark to focus on any of the few belongings she has scattered around. So her attention turns to herself, and she makes a mental list: silver-colored hair clinging to her temples and forehead, drops of water, warm as they slide down her cheeks, cold as they make the way from the base of her neck down her spine, where they dampen the fabric of her cheek and make her shiver. The humming of her pulmonodes inside her chest, working overtime to pump what little oxygen is in there.

Voe manages to draw in a breath.

The blue blade of Hennix's lightsaber fades into the hilt with a hum. Voe squeezes her eyes shut, opens them only to be greeted by the familiar darkness of her room. The last words of Ben Solo play in her head.

Why do you even want to live?

The answer comes easily, spoken into the nothingness of her bedroom, for no ears but her own to catch and yet, she speaks the words with such certainty:

"To make you pay."

Voe has a thing for hands.
