Just a collection of miscellaneous thoughts I've had.

Clothes There are just some things Anne is never without for a variety of reasons. She stays well-armed at all times and rarely lets her guard down. regardless of how she may be acting (see next section). There are, however, three things Anne is never without. Seeing Anne without these things means only the worst (an emergency, capture, marooning, etc.).

hat | Leather and weathered, with only one of it pinned up for better line of sight as needed. One of the first things she acquired with her own coin.

coat | Formerly quite nice, now quite weathered and threadbare, sun bleached. I’m toying with the concept of this having been her father’s, taken the night she was disowned. I dunno if I like that, though.

knife | Noticeably, Anne's knife is not really a piece of clothing. It is also not something everyone knows about, despite being the most significant of the items. At 15 years old, Anne murdered another girl using that exact same knife. She was the first of Anne's victims, casualty of a mistake, and Anne is very attached to the knife for reasons even she does not wholly understand. It is a small, porcelain-handled jack knife Anne keeps hidden on or near her person at all times, usually in the waistband of her trousers.

Relaxation

As well as not being a terribly talkative person, Anne tends to guarded and on high alert at all times. She lives a life of danger so constant, even her “time off” can be stressful and unrelaxing. As a result, I don’t actually know what Anne would do with proper downtime. What she has of it now she often uses re/checking maps, ledgers, stock, notes, etc.; as one of a small number of “learned” pirates, she often feels it’s her duty to perform these re/checks even when not asked to—or, sometimes, even when asked directly not to. So while I can’t give you the activities specifically, I can give you the vibes/signs to look for to tell whether Anne’s actually relaxed around you or not.

She’s not. Lmao nah but:

She is hat off, coat off, and—sometimes—boots off. The less prepared the an immediate emergency evacuation she looks, the more relaxed she probably is.

Similarly, if she’s not tense, has her guard down, etc., you’re in luck. The ability to perceive you as not being an active threat is akin to friendship in Anne’s book!

If the Anne you are interacting with seems peaceful or focused, just essentially not fidgety or mad, she’s actually relaxed. Yes, even if she’s complaining.

Anne actually snorts when Shadowheart, prickly and defensive, tries to cast aspersions onto her. Here all she’s said is the world isn’t as against the cleric as she thinks, simply is not in love with her, and her hackles have gone up! What in the hells is in the water these religious types drink? Anne levels a look that says you really should have seen this coming before she replies.

“Oh, the world’s fucking against me, have no doubt! Hates me. Made me what I am and rejects me, don’t matter a whit. I live on spite and audacity alone.” That’s at least mostly true. Anne shrugs and falls silent.

They share an inability to express vulnerability, but Anne’s found that to be standard in those who would take on a life of adventure. The burdened few, ignoring their burdens by facing the burdens of others. Anne’s known their type, her type, all her life. She’s been surrounded by them since birth.

“I only meant to say that the world hasn’t proved half so hostile to ye as ye act it does. Just ‘cause the world don’t love ye don’t mean it hates ye.”

@tryckthebard made the fatal mistake of befriending me. 😈

The moment Tryck followed her off the ship and into the streets of Nassau, Anne knew she was done for. It was one thing to speak plans into the air while at sea, drunk on intimacy and affection, but quite another to act on them in the full light of day on unsure shores. Every man she’d made the mistake of before (and now with) Tryck was a good talker. But a good doer? He would be the first.

And she would hang herself by his violin strings before admitting that she’d only learned the literal truth of being made weak in the knees at the thought of him now.

“Thyself shalt see the act. For, as thou urgest justice, be assured Thou shalt have justice more than thou desir’st,” Anne reads. It would appear she’s most ways through the thin book in her hands, and from the shine in her eyes, it’s clear there’s conflict afoot in the plot. It’s one of Anne’s favorite plays, having often been called dubbed Portia—and Kate, and Viola, and a few other notables—by her father in her youth. It isn’t hard to guess why. The trickiest bit of this scheme, Anne’s favorite meting out of true justice, is mere lines away when the bed creaks again.

As before, she glances up at check it; very much not as before, the occupant in it is clearly awake. Anne does a double take before removing her feet from the frame of the bed, the front two legs of her chair slamming back down on the floor.

Anne doesn’t truck with the supernatural. She may be unsure of whether or not she buys into religion, but (even in more grounded verses) she wholeheartedly believes in things like magic, ghosts, devilry, etc..

And she does not fuck with them.

Which is probably why one of my favorite things to do is to make her contend with the supernatural. :3c

That said, there’s a fortune-telling “game” played with a pack of cards that she takes seriously and will sometimes, usually reluctantly, participate in.
