Stub your cigarette out on the brick wall next to you and slip the butt into her jacket packet to dispose of later; you’ll count the butts like change in the evening, trying to tally the day’s total. Today will be less than others. Today you have a show to play. Walk back into the concert venue to hear the same bitching and moaning as before—

But before Anne can get there, Jan leaps out of nowhere and nearly gives her a heart attack. “FUCK!” He’s lucky, he really is, that she’s unarmed; if Anne had more than a lighter, half a carton of cigarettes and three butts in her pockets, she would’ve used that more to stab him or worse! As things are, she presses a hand to her chest, huffing and rolling her eyes.

“Oh, aye—scared enough to’ve stabbed twice over if I had my knife! Ye can’t just jump out at people like that without expecting one to the gut around here.” She huffs a laugh, shaking her head. “Asshole.” Somehow, it doesn’t quite like an insult coming from her.

knows   he   is   playing   with   fire   whenever   he   changes   shape   from   playful   musician   to   playful   jokester.   knows   better   than   most   the   sharpness   of   the   claws   on   the   one   he   keeps   close.   sees   sharp   teeth   and   can   only   wonder   what   it   would   be   like   to   be   bitten   and   bite   in   turn.   has   long   since   realized   that   his   own   teeth   aren't   half   as   sharp,   but   has   never   allowed   that   to   stop   him   even   for   a   second   !

Anne sighs loudly, but her exasperation is exaggerated; when Jan throws an arm over her shoulders and paints the headline, a thin smile picks up the corners of her lips. She looks for a moment at the imaginary headline before turning her attention back to him from the corner of her eye. He’s a strange one, light and puckish and more mysterious than anyone she’s ever known despite acting like a friendly, open book. It’s no wonder the world loves him. It’d be stupid, entirely, not to.

—And then he presses a sloppy kiss to her cheek and she laughs even as she pushes him away and tries to clean her cheek.

“Oh, aye—so long as I don’t get thrown in jail for attempted homicide, ye mean! Are we a fuckin band or are we fuckin stage magicians now? The era of that sort of shite is well over; should’ve enjoyed the shock rock heyday while we could’ve!” But it’s…not actually a bad idea. Not if they could get the others onboard with it…. “‘Less ye’re lookin to bring it back from the dead, we’ll need a less murderous hook for our gigs.”

I never let you go into anything alone. The words are heavy, weighty with a significance she doesn’t understand but spots all the same. It reminds her of the first time she’d found herself at the center of his web, slamming her head into his nose just to find some measure of control in the moment. Should’ve known she was lighting a fuse in that moment, but what had she know? Flat fucking idiot, her, underestimating what the Shark was capable of. No chaos too great he couldn’t find her through it, hey?

Anne’s eyes narrow to sharp shards of glass in a glare, turning hard and flinty once more. She can almost hear the mockery in that sentence, the reminder that he had had to finish what she had not with James. She doesn’t fight the vague sneer on her face. He’d approached from behind and thrown a knife through his throat before registering who it was. She’d seen the fucker helping out all night, clumsily keeping a distance as he did so. He yanked the damned thing out himself and collapsed to the ground; his blood had stopped by the time she’d bent down to retrieve it.

“He suffered plenty afore he died. But I watched him die, if that’s what ye meant. Dunno if I’d’ve called it quick, though….”

There’s plenty she wants to know, how he found her and why he’s coming forward now again, et cetera, et cetera, but she doesn’t know how to ask a word of it. So she doesn’t, sitting back like a good bitch, head cocked, waiting for the next order.

pokes   his   fingers   into   the   wounds.   knows   he   is   dragging   out   the   healing,   but   favours   the   way   gnarly   gashes   turn   into   scars   as   long   as   he   keeps   picking   at   the   scabs.   draws   patterns   now   with   his   fingertips   across   her   thigh,   means   nothing   more   than   to   remind   her   of   who   gets   to   do   the   picking,   and   who   gets   to   bear   the   scars.   finds   emotional   manipulation   quite   effective   when   administered   in   pleasant   little   doses.   rings   a   bell   to   condition   a   good   bitch,   runs   high-value   treats   between   his   fingers   and   waits   for   her   to   beg   to   lick   them   up.   it   is   good   to   remind   her   of   her   failures        ⎯⎯⎯⎯        turns   her   more   susceptible   to   the   praise   for   her   successes.

❝   a   horrible   slow   death   ?   ❞   clicks   his   tongue   against   the   roof   of   his   mouth.   finds   the   taste   of   metal   there   like   a   reminder   that   they   could   not   permanently   put   him   in   the   ground.   ❝   oh   well   done   you   clever   girl.   ❞   sings   praises   like   an   out-of-tune   crow   but   the   pride   fluttering   against   broken   bone   of   his   rib   cage   is   real   and   very   pure   in   its   notes.

silence   bugs   him   like   a   pest.   circles   between   them   like   a   fly   he   can't   wait   to   squash.   open   palm   against   her   thigh   now,   digs   fingertips   into   flesh,   squeezes   only   to   hear   if   she   can   hold   a   tune   still.   ❝   come   now,   anne.   none   of   this   silence,   we   talked   about   this        ⎯⎯⎯        you   use   your   words   and   i   won't   lie   to   you.   a   simple   transaction   if   you   ask   me.   but   it   does   mean   that   you   have   to   stop   being   so   passive.   it   does   not   suit   you,   and   it   is   not   why   i   keep   you   around,   is   it   now   ?   ❞

He pets and praises her like a dog—and were he any other man, she’d sneer away the treatment, tell him to get his fucking hands off of her. But he’s not any other man. He’s not even a man: he’s a shark, like his namesake, stalking, lurking in shallows and depths alike, always circling, circling, circling. He isn’t like any man she’s ever known—so she accepts the treatment. Hates herself for the way her body starts to lose its tension, hackles and guard lowering without her consent. He fingers wounds metaphorical and literal and Anne grits her teeth and bares it, knowing he could make it that much worse, knowing he WOULD make it that much worse, just to watch her run. She swallows against his praise (it doesn’t feel like a thing well done, it feels like an ignominious death) and holds it down like one might swallow their own bile to keep from throwing up.

He invites—well, instructs—her to speak, and Anne takes a cool moment before doing so to sort through the questions in her head. He offers her truth and she knows firsthand what a bitter poison that is when he drip-feeds it into the ears of those around him. His words are snakes, hissing coils, dangerous, slithering in through the air to burrow into the heart. She can’t ask anything she doesn’t truly want to know, because he will tell her…and she will suffer for it. She’d like to know how he found her, what routes he tracked her through, why it took a back-alley assassination attempt to finally draw him back out of the shadows, even how he got into this room, but at the end of the day, only one question matters.

“Why let me leave if you were just going to track me back down?”

Anne drags her heavy carcass into the room, barely able to keep standing on her own two feet. Door closes with solid thunk behind her as she leans against it—and spots him, seated on one of the few horizontal spaces in the sparse room. She wasn’t expecting him to be here…but she’s not surprised that he is, not really. He beckons her closer and like an obedient bitch, she goes, thoughtlessly wiping at some blood on her face. It’s a red smear now, and only that. What’s on her face and neck isn’t hers, for the most part, though her right arm is starting to hurt like a bitch. She accepts the invitation, mock- or not, sitting on his lap with a sharp exhale.

“My day was…eventful. But I have a feeling you know that already.” And it isn’t just the state of her that tells her that. What was supposed to be a very easy revenge killing had very quickly become a daring one-woman escape against terrifying odds, ending both in Anne’s intended target escaping and related to Anne by schemas unseen by her dying at her hands. It only makes sense Silva would’ve been involved in some unseen web of destruction.

“I killed a man,” she announces candidly, leaning back to watch his face, gauge a reaction. “In hindsight, he might’ve been one of yours. Short fella. Bald head, tattoo of a snake….” Anne gestures vaguely around her head, indicating the path of the tattoo.
